Does anybody have any experience in shooting the 338/06 or the JDJ version out of the Encore pistol. If so please let me know. I have one in a bolt gun and am looking for a good combo. That and my dad thinks it is silly that anyone would put a rifle cartridge in a handgun.. I think he is jealous, a non believer  anyway... :D

Kyode, you should have seen his eyes when I shoved a 45/70 at him and he said " Man that is a big round " then I shoved my pistol to him. You would have thought I cursed my momma.
 I know I want / need one, but wanna get someones feed back before going to wife with another sad tale  of neglext and need.

I have been researching a 338-something for some time now. I don't know that  the JDJ is really worth it, in a handgun barrel. But that is just my opinion. I guess if I already had set of dies though, for a 338 whatever. That is likely the way I would go.   But I guess it depends what kinda ranges you are looking to shoot at. Personally, I think 200-250 yds is a long shot for a handgun on live game. And in reality, 2350fps will get there readily. And a 338-06 will shoot a 200 gr, at 2450 quite easily
One that I am considering for a handgun length barrel, ia a 338-40 Krag IMP.  It looks like it will shoot a 200 gr. at or near 2400. And with very good efficiency.
But again, if I had the 338-06 dies, I would get one of those in a 15-16" in a heartbeat :wink:

thanks one,
 I think you are right. I have 3- 338's so I have plenty of bullets.
I was thinking the 180 Nosler, although a little fragile out of my rifle at the lower speeds the bullet should do nice. I know my favorite 215 sierra won't even wake up at that speed.

Kyode,
 You can't go wrong with it. If you get Lee dies and the resize dies says 338/06 AI don't get your hopes up to quick, they had a snafu at the factory. These are standard dies not AI, so much is the pity. I am really Jonesin for one in 15" but am wanting 209x50 in same length. Wife will not go for it

Hmmm, decissions and priorities. Wife, barrels, barrels, wife, could just flip a coin, heads= barrels and going without ___, or tails=going without barrels :lol:
Decissions regarding such matters, is really an art form :wink:

I just finished playing with a loaner 15 1/2" (counting the built in brake) SSK Encore barrel chambered in 338-06 JDJ.

I made up loads consisting of 58.5 to 60.5grs of Varget under 225gr Hornady SST's and Hornady 200gr SP's with CCI-BR2 primers and the better of the loads easily grouped between 1 to 1 1/4" off bags at 100yds.

Even with the brake there was no doubt in your mind whatsoever when the hammer fell and to be honest after I'd fired 36 rounds in one sitting I'd had just about all the fun I wanted for one shooting session......as a side note I also shoot a 15" Encore barrel in 45-70, without a brake or porting, with a load of 58.5grs of Varget under a Rem. 300gr JHP so I'm aware of what recoil is.

Random quotes on the 338-06 JDJ from Cartridges of the World;

Shoulder angle is 60ยบ therefore the 338-06 JDJ is a maximized 338-06....case capacity is a whopping 76grs of water which is significantly greater than the 338-06's 71grs of water....Handloads in SSK pistol length barrels can easily approach 338-06 A-Square "rifle" ballistics....working pressure is about 60,000psi so ballistics are quite impressive......End Quotes.

After playing and being able to say, "been there done that" (plus the fact I wanted something else worse) I returned the barrel to Ed Kirkpatrick and he sold it to a fella in Wash. that is getting 1" groups at 2495fps with a 225gr Hornady SP over 61.0grs of IMR4064 and is looking forward to taking a bear with it this fall.

Thanks for the info IKe. That is what I was wanting to know. I used to shoot a 4570 contender and with the load u described I would say you are not in the recoil shy department. I think after talking to others I will opt for the 338/06
