The residents of Barrow Alaska saw the sun for the first time today this year!

Kind of puts a whole new meaning to winter nights!

I think we've gained over a hlaf hour already and I sure do like it! Beginning to have enough daylight to do something in the afternoon.

Dec. 21st is supposted to be the shortest day of the year but to many it seems like around the tenth. The reason is the time of day that the sun rises in relation to the people being up.  As the days get longer the increase is more noticable in the PM because your awake at that time.

It's starting to get light out on the drive home from work, always a spirit lifter.

In a sense we can relate to the folks above the arctic circle, because our house is located in a valley, and doesn't get direct sunlight for a couple of months.  Nothing like when the sun first breaks through the bay window on the S side of the house.

You guys are bringing back some pleasant memories.  Our home in Eagle River sat close enough to the mountain that the January/February sun seemed to track just below the crest all day.  To ward off cabin fever I'd tie coho flies for the first run of reds and start thinking spring bear...  Read on adn.com today that Craig Campbell got a brig gen star.  He's come a long way!  Used to live 2 doors down from us in ER.

Yea being in a valley does cut down on the sun quite a bit.  I wish that they would move some of the mountains to the south of me between Cordova and Valdez.  I loved my apartment in Shaktoolik.  The sunrise just sort of started on one side of the school and worked slowly around to the other side. Fantastic sunsets on the Bering sea every night.

We still have not had any snow over here since Dec. Only light stuff once in a while.  I probably jinxed myself just then. :cry:

We're in Eagle River, and yup, the sun sure likes to sneak just under that mountain!  

We're looking at getting some property on the North side of Eagle River Rd, about mile 6, great views from the Glacier all the way around to the inlet.
