Leaving In Line Loaded w/ 777?

I just returned from a weekend trip in which I loaded my encore 209 x 50 but did not fire it.

It is loaded with 777.  I would like to store it (without the primer, of course) for about 60 days, so that I can pick it up and go, when those late season blackpowder dates are open.

Is there any problem with this in regards to corrosion?

smoky,
I know folks that leave it loaded for the season (here in NY about 6 days) but I just don't like the idea.  The pyrodex and triple 7 are so hygroscopic that just bringing a cold gun indoors or vice versa will cause the powder to pick up moisture.  Now I suppose there are tricks like sealing up the muzzle and nipple but I always fire mine off after the end of a day's hunt.....cheap insurance!  And if you ever have a hang-fire I'll bet you won't do it again!

I would recommend pulling the breech plug and pushing the load out. I would not have much confidence in a load that was stored in the rifle for 2 months before hunting. It probably would be fine but to take the chance of either the load being contaminated or reduced in effectiveness or damaging the rifle, it's just not worth it. Pull the load and clean it.

I agree with quickdtoo. Better to know you have fresh powder in the gun.  :D

Ok, I have some to add to this. I have a small barn on my property where  park my tractor, store hay and leave some of my shooting supplies. The T7 pellets I bought the first of the year have been there all this time. I shot some of them this week before opeing a freshly bought box of pellets. They were very dark and sputtered a bit when fired. I never hit my 2' x 2' target so I can't say if I'm shooting high or low. Opened the fresh box and was hitting my 5" shoot-n-c targets. I would not store this for more than say a week but if you hunt every day and take it from heat to cold I wouldn't do that either. If you are at a camp where you can leave it in your cold vehicle when not hunting it should be fine but if it's an inline I'd pull the plug and let it drop out the breech. If not I'd pull it or fire it every day.

I will use the same load for 2 days.  If I haven't gotten a shot after that I fire it off for target practice, swab, and reload.  With 777 I don't bother to do a full clean for 4-5 days (pyrodex I would every time).
   Of course, with so many deer around it's been awhile since I had to go 2 days without shooting!

As long as you are not in a high humidity area it will be fine. My wife loaded her Omega with 150 grains of Pyrodex on September 22 for a moose hunt. She never got a shot but on a whitetail hunt October 21st she shot that load at the guy posted below. The proof is, as they say, in the pudding.

Omega: You guys in Alberta grow some nice animals; makes us SW USA guys a little jealous. Only thing we have here in Arizona that compares is
a fair Elk population. Trouble is here we have to put into a lottery to get drawn for a hunt tag. I have been lucky and been drawn four out of five years but I put in for muzzleloader anterless since I am mainly a meat hunter.

We are lucky here, no doubt. We have just about all the big game species in NA here to hunt. Some are on draw but most we are able to hunt every year on a general tag. :D

Nice buck but if I saw one of those and pulled the trigger on a load that had been in there a couple of months, because I wanted to save a few dollars, and it didn't go off I think they would see me kicking myself all the way back home!  I would rather be safe than sorry because around here those bucks are few and far between!

I leave my muzzle loader loaded for no more then 2 weeks. If I have not shot by them I will pull the load and get rid of the powder and save the bullet at over a $1.00 each I need to save them!

I shot my rifle thursday took it hone and gave it a good cleaning. monday while in the woods I started to look over it real well and found that it started to rust it was very light and I was able to take care if it with no troubles.  you can always get one of the CO2 powered bullet blowers and just blow the load out and then give it a good coat of oil.

No doubt, but this wasn't exactley her (our) first rodeo. We've done this many times before and it has always gone boom. Click the link below to see the one she passed on as her buck was still at the field edge. You need Real Player (www.real.com free player). I dumped the sound so I could keep the video quality up. the buck is 80 yards from us at the end.

Omega, tried to play your clip and it kept coming up as an error.  I'm sure it was an awesome buck though.  Someone I know goes to Alberta every few years and twice has come home with monsters!  

No offense meant on my comments.  Truth be known I leave a charge in throughout the season here, but what I meant was if I was to hunt in your neck of the woods, with what it would cost me to do so, then I probably wouldn't store a charge.

WOW Omega, great clip, thanks for sharing.  I had to dump my old version of RealPlayer and download the new version.

I filmed 2 other bucks of this caliber in the 1 1/2 days she hunted, once she got her buck i went elk hunting. There was a really nice buck (much bigger) there too that we never even hunted. The best part about this is it took place October 21, a month before the rut , when the real big boys show up!

I don't like to leave mine loaded. I use one of the CO2 powered dischargers to unload my Omega, and then run a patch down to clean any leftover residue.
