I saw a used Encore 209x50 stainless rifle setup with grey laminated stock. Price was $400.

The rifle had a huge ugly Simmons scope on it. I would want to remove the scope mounts and restore the original sights. They are missing.

My question is how does one install the bases for the scope. Does one just remove the rear sight and install the mount? I want to know what I am getting my self into if I but this setup. Should I just be able to remove the scope & mounts and put a sight back on and plug the front holes.

How far apart are the factory scope mount holes?

This would be my first muzzleloader. The end of the barrel looked clean and shiny. What else should I look for before I buy?

At this price not a huge gamble.

Pull the breech plug, check the barrel for pitting, check over the action and frame, everything else is repairable... that is a steal at $400... you can replace sights, and plug scope mount holes. Just buy that Encore!

There are seven holes drilled and tapped in the barrel. The front sight is attached by the hole closest to the muzzle. The two holes just forward of the scope mount are used to mount the rear sight. The scope mount is attached by the four holes at breech end of the barrel.

This design is set up to mount a scope and still leave the open sights intact.

If you are planning on permanently removing the scope and mount get yourself four filler screws to fill the holes to protect the threads. I believe they are 6-48.

Sound to me like its a pretty good deal at $400. I have the same setup S/S and Boyd grey laminated stockset. I wish I only had $400 tied up in it.

Why do you want to get rid of the scope mount? I'd ditch the big ugly Simmons scope and replace it with a nice compact Bushnell, SIghtron, Or Leupold. Then replace the sights if you like.

No scopes allowed during muzzleoader season in Minnesota.

I'm not an iron sight shooter, but recently I looked through the peep sight on a Katahdin barrel in my local store.

I think if I had to shoot without a scope, I would seriously consider a good peep.

Maybe thats an alternative for you as well.

Just a thought.
