Help me decide
« on: October 24, 2004, 10:54:07 AM »
I went to BPS yesterday and was looking at the bullets. I'm thinking about getting another rifle.  I was looking at the 22 hornet and the .223. the 55 grainer for the .223 travels about 3400 fps. I don't know about the 22 hornet. I kinda want to lean for the 22 hornet. I don't know how accurate the hornet is. I won't be hunting any 'yotes. It's kinda a nostalgia thing I guess. :-D  How would a hornet do on something like the size of a bobcat?  BTW, I took my 30-30 to the range this morning to make sure it's on. It is. I think I'm going to start cleaning my gun barrels with the stuff I use on my ML. I was talking to some guys today at the rang and they were telling me, that since they switched to ml cleaners ( all naturals) htat they have seen deer  where before using petro products they haven't seen deer. It must be the smell of the petro .   They also told me that it hasn't made a difference in the shooting and their barrels  seem to clean up a lot better and the rust factor has been eliminated.

Tommy'

In Ohio the 'cats are protected.    But, I have seen films of bobcats slinking in to the caller, and stopping at a good distance before coming further.    'Cats, unlike coyotes, will take a much longer time to come in -- and they may bust your setup before you get a close-in shot with a .22 Hornet.   :(

The .223 with 40 or 45 gr' pills will reach out there (250+ yds) and take a 'yote or 'cat whereas the Hornet can't get that kind of reach with that level of killing power.    The .223 is also capable of target-grade accuracy with readily-available components.    The Hornet brass is usually more expensive, with the cartridge itself (in my opinion, lest someone start crying!) being more finicky about load development.

I'd have a lot more faith in a .223 for putting down a varmint or a deer right where it stands as compared to a .22 Hornet.

The .223 get's my vote anyday. Plus even if you  decide to start  reloading , this caliber is cheap and easy.

later bull b 25-06   :D

I have one of each, while the hornet is a fun gun not as loud and a very mild recoil. You will probley get more use out of the 223 plus more affable ammo.
