I can get a Nikon Monarch cheaper than a Luppy VIII.  Is it worth it?  Do Nikon scopes hold up well?  Customer service?  Are you satisfied?  I know Luppy's are Luppy's, but can I get the quality  of a Luppy in a Nikon and get it a little more cheaper?

You get what you pay for. A Japanese made scope with no customer support beyond giving you a new one if it breaks compared to an American made scope supported by real people who are very responsive to customer's needs. Take your choice.

Disagree!  Would take the Nikon over the Leupold any day.  $ for $, the Nikon Monarch is hands above the Leupold.

I'm with you nobade!  I won't argue which is better, but with globalization, I'm keeping my money in the USA!

I've got a VX3 and a Nikon Monarch.  To me, the monarch is better optically.  It's pretty easy for me to see but it could just be my eyes.  The VX3 is a 1.5-5x20 and the Monarch is a 4x40.  It doesn't matter what power the Leupold is on, the Monarch looks brighter.  That being said, I still think the Leupold is a great scope.  I got it for the size, weight, and field of view advantage it had over the Nikon (...and I ran into a good deal on it...).  I really like the thought of American made as well...

I've got a Monarch Gold, and it's definately a field above the Leupold, but it is price-wise as well.

Both have their advantages:
Nikon:  brightness, lower price
Leupold:  warranty, American made, size/weight, eye relief

Both have a lifetime warranty.  There's others for each, but really it comes down to what you're looking for in a scope.

Take care,

JCM

Now, that's a great response, thanks JCM.  I appreciate it.

As far as buying American, let's not make this into a patriotic thing.  I own a Dodge and a Harley, but believe me, a Toyota and a Honda probably wouldn't have given me as many problems.   I try to support the US but in this case, I'm looking at the better scope.  Thanks for input.

OZ - thanks.  I have heard that.  That's the purpose of my question.

I own several Leupold Vari-X IIIs as well as many Nikon Monarchs, and the Nikons are clearer and brighter than the Vari-X IIIs.  I think the new VXIIIs are probably better than the Monarchs, but I really don't have any hands on experience.

The monarchs have served me very well over the years with no problems whatsoever, and I have put them through the ringer!  I highly recommend the Monarchs - Ask Jon at the optic zone, he should know since I have bought quite a few of them from him.

That's not a good comparison... a 1.5-5x20....to a 4x40...no matter what make or model it is...

I own a Vari X 2.. 3x9 x 33 and a new Vari X 3 3.5-10 x 40...and there is a difference in  brightness between them...and I've also owned a Vari X 1...  2-7 X 33 as well...all 3 to me are brighter than any 20 MM out there...because they are...more light can pass thru them, than the smaller tubes...clarity is different between them as well...not because of the larger lenes that's in them...but,for the quality of the glass and  for the coating that's on them...but the one thing that is absolutly great about them...is the none critical eye relief...and this makes a big difference  shooting when  not wearing heavy jackets as compared to shooting with them on...I also owned a Nikon Monach 3x9x40...once...and  I wasn't impressed as what I thought I would be...it was ok...but nowhere as good as my new Leupold to my eyes...

Nunk, I think they are both good scopes, my buddy just bought 2 of the Nikon Monarch for his Encore M/L and 300 Win Mag barrel. The glass is very clear. Now me personally, I put Leupold's on my guns. They are also very clear. I have had Leupold's for many years and I have had great success with them, and I am very happy with the performance and support Leupold gives. I am very brand loyal, if I have good results with something I stick with it.   :D

Nunk,

I've only had one Nikon and it was a good clear scope, but I have compaired the Bushnell 4200 series side by side to a Luppy and the 4200 was clearer and brighter than the Luppy. I have since replace all my Luppy's with the 4200 series Bushnell's.

I would get what I could see through best. One thing that I have noticed is there are more used Luppy's for sale than anything else, think about all the adds you see for used scopes for sale.

I  think you are sadly mistaken. I see all kinds and brands of used scopes for sale. But have you noticed that Leupold holds there value. Granted Bushnell 4200 are good scopes, but the clarity is not better than Leupold in my opinion.

As far as the Jap vx American thing, Leupold uses Jap glass in all of their scopes, just as Nikon does.  Leupolds are a poor value for product received.  There are many equally good or better scopes for the money, especially vs. VXIII.  i.e. Burris, Nikon, Elite 4200, and definitely Zeiss Conquest.  Leupold wins the marketing category hands down, but they are a poor bang for the buck in my opinion.
