I've had a .300 W Contender barrel since they first came out.  DO NOT consider subsonic loads for deer!  These were designed for sniper use on enemy helmets, not for lung shots on deer; the long, heavy bullets will not expand and they cannot be depended upon to tumble with adequate penetration.

The .300 does very well with 125-grain Ballistic Tips, and their velocity does not need to be maximum for up to 100 yard shots.  I used these bullets in a .30 Carbine barrel loaded to 1850 fps ( way too hot, do not try it!) and they killed Kodiak Island deer very well.  The .300 can get up to 200 fps more out of the same bullet and has a great reputation.  Some use the 150 BTips, particularly in longer barrels. The .300 isn't quite as potent as the .30 Herrett, but it is a fine choice for the recoil-shy.

adirondacker,

I have a T/C Custom Shop 12" barrel in .300 Whisper, and so far I'm really liking it.  I am currently shooting factory Cor-Bon 150 gr. loads in it and the recoil is not at all severe.  My buddy's Contender in .30-30 has considerably more kick.  After my factory loads are gone, I will probably be loading 125-130 grain bullets for it.  I haven't had the opportunity to try it on deer yet (season starts in 3 weeks) but I have been assured the caliber is more than adequate for 100+ yard kills.  It currently shoots 2 MOA groups off the bench with me behind the trigger (good trigger job would help).  I have been considering having a rifle barrel made to start my stepson out.  I know there are a lot more common rounds out there, but I like the look on peoples face when they see that tiny case with a .30 caliber bullet sticking out of it.

Good shooting,

Good advice Lone Star.  If you want to shoot slow bullets for game make em big diameter of a design to inflict tissue damage.  A small diameter spitzer at low velocity tend to pass through with minimal damage.  Small diameter and high velocity equals lots of hydrolic shock and works well.  quote="Lone Star"]I've had a .300 W Contender barrel since they first came out.  DO NOT consider subsonic loads for deer!  These were designed for sniper use on enemy helmets, not for lung shots on deer; the long, heavy bullets will not expand and they cannot be depended upon to tumble with adequate penetration.

I shoot the factory 150 grain cor bons in a T/C custom shop 10 3/4 and the  accuracy is amazing, less than .40 MOA. Thats better than any rifle I have ever shot.
The box label claims 2000 fps but does not list a barrel length. These are hot and several primers have flatted.

If 2000fps is correct for a 10 inch barrel its hotter than a Herrett.
Has anyone put these over a chrono?

I also shoot a 300 Whisper for deer.  It put's them down right now....

I shoot the 125 ballistic tips at 1900fps in a 10" Contender.  (I'm afraid that 150 grainers at 2K would take my gun apart!)   This is very near to max in my gun.  The powder is H110.  Last year two deer were taken.  One went 7 or 8 steps, and one went zero steps.  I am completely sold on the round.   BTW- a sand bag and a field of praire dogs is a blast as well......   Get one and enjoy!  jh

I'm a bit confused on the CorBon ammo; 2000 fps in a 10" is very hot!  I assume that they mean from a longer rifle barrel, for which this cartridge was originally designed.  At equal pressures the Herrett will give higher velocities - more horsepower from that larger case.
