Royal Navy to allow devil worship
Sunday, October 24, 2004 Posted: 9:50 AM EDT (1350 GMT)

Devil worship: Type 22 frigate, HMS Cumberland

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A devil-worshipping sailor in the Royal Navy has become the first registered Satanist in the British Armed Forces.

Chris Cranmer, 24, a technician serving on the Type 22 frigate Cumberland, has been officially recognized as a Satanist by the ship's captain.

That allows him to perform satanic rituals aboard and permits him to have a non-Christian Church of Satan funeral should he be killed in action.

A spokesman for Britain's Ministry of Defence told CNN Sunday that it had a duty to allow members of the forces to practice their religion.

He added that the MoD was an "equal opportunities employer" which did not stop anyone having their own religious values.

"The Royal Navy allows this kind of approach because it is clearly in line with current regulations. We are not aware of any other individuals who want to be registered as Satanists."

Cranmer, 24, who comes from Edinburgh, Scotland, is now lobbying the Ministry of Defence to make Satanism a registered religion in the Armed Forces, says Britain's Sunday Telegraph.

He says he wants Satanists to be able to join the military without "fear of marginalisation and the necessity to put up with Christian dogma."

The defense ministry told CNN that Cranmer went to his commanding officer with a request to practice his beliefs on board his ship and, after consultation with the ship's chaplain, this was granted.

The decision was at the discretion of the captain, the MoD, said, and was on the basis that it did not impinge on the operational effectiveness, safety or security of the ship, or the well-being of colleagues.

Tour of duty
Cranmer, who has been aboard the Cumberland's tour of duty in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf since April, said that being registered as a Satanist gave him "the freedom of religion I wanted despite its controversial nature".

Cranmer, who is single, has been in the Royal Navy for four years and was promoted leading hand -- the naval equivalent of corporal -- in July last year.

He told the newspaper that he realized he was a Satanist nine years ago when he "stumbled across" The Satanic Bible by American 'Black Pope' Anton Szandor LaVey. "I then read more and came to realize I'd always been a Satanist, just simply never knew."

He added that he had been "warmly congratulated" by his friends and family for becoming the Armed Forces' first Satanist but did not feel that the war in Iraq was "the Devil's work."

"From a military perspective, I believe in vengeance. I don't consider Satan to be an intelligently external force in my life; instead I consider it an empowering internal force.

"If I were asked if I were evil, I would say yes -- by virtue of the common definition. However, if you asked my family and friends you would hear a resounding 'no'. I get a massive amount from my career."

Satanic rules
The Church of Satan was established in San Francisco in 1966 and LaVey was its high priest until his death in 1997.

Members of the church, which rejects Christian ideas of God and the Devil, follow 11 "Satanic Rules of the Earth."

The belief system has been condemned as a cult by some religious groups and at least one opposition politician expressed dismay after Cranmer won permission to practice Satanism aboard a Royal Navy ship.

"I am utterly shocked by this," Conservative parliamentarian Anne Widdecombe told Reuters.

"Satanism is wrong. Obviously the private beliefs of individuals anywhere including the armed forces are their own affair but I hope it doesn't spread," she said.

Religion has nothing to do with satanism. Satanism is a cult designed to destroy a mans soul and condemn him to eternal damnation. The first storm that ship encounters, mr cranmer should be lost at sea. Under no circumstances should he be allowed to promote this type of trash. I would never say that the practice of Satanism is acceptable, but I would also never say that he is not free to do as he wishes.
Freedom of religion is the freedom to not practice it as well as the freedom to practice unconventional religions.
Keep that in mind before you condemn the Royal Navy for allowing it.
Our armed forces would have to allow it as well.

yes ranger is right but it is my understanding that military life is about teamwork and co-operation. this kind of thing could make him an outcast with the rest of the crew, who might not want to be around him. that could have a negative impact on the moral and effectiveness of the crew. never a good thing on a ship of war.

This is a perfect example why it's best the government stay out of the religion game.  This would extend to prayers in school.  If the school allows ANY form of religion it MUST accept all forms...

London Times | Oct 26 2004

THE mother of the Royal NavyÂ’s first officially recognised Satanist said yesterday that her devil-worshipping son was a sweet and loving man who used to accompany her to church.
Leading Hand Chris Cranmer, 24, a naval technician in the Royal Navy frigate HMS Cumberland, is the first British serviceman allowed to perform satanic acts and rituals associated with the Church of Satan in his ship.

His mother, Catherine, 51, said that her son was “the least evil person you could meet”.

Mrs Cranmer, of Kirkliston, West Lothian, said that he had been a churchgoer until five years ago, when he renounced Christianity for the Church of Satan, formed in 1966 in San Francisco. “When he was around 14 years of age, he started to read about other religions.

“Up until then he was a member of the Boys Brigade.

“I am proud of the way he had stood up for his beliefs. He does not have an evil bone in his body and is an upstanding member of society.

“He is a very kind, sweet and good-natured son who loves his family deeply. He is the best son a mother could have,” Mrs Cranmer said.

She admitted that she was not thrilled when her son told her he was converting, but blames her response on ignorance. “That’s the problem, unless you read into it, you think it’s all death and horror.

“It conjures up many weird and wonderful images, but being a Satanist is not like that at all. The church has 11 rules, rather like commandments. There is a rule saying you can be sexually promiscuous and enjoy life, but most people in today’s society do that anyway,” she added.

Leading Hand Cranmer calls himself a magistrate of the Society of the Onyx Star Black Guard and uses the codename Demon Jock on Satanist websites.

That punk should never be allowed to practice his so called religion around decent folks. If he wants to go to hell, thats his business, but he doesn't have the right to to take others with him. Rifle ranger is right, the minesweep I was on at the end of Viet Nam we had 2 cult members on board. They did their job, served their country and dint try to ply their religon on any of the crew. They attended services while in port.
The CO, XO werent happy about their religon but it was their choice. We were operating out of Hai Fong (or how ever you spell it) ( where ho-chi-mein city is) clearing the harbor of mines to gain the release of the "POW'S.

Yep, right before I got out of the Army, I had two wiccans in my squad.  I treated them as I would have treated everyone, but I had my own opinions.  I view the resurgence in the wiccan faith on todays society (I view it as a Hollywood religion much like scientology).  For instance, we had a dimsitted female in the Batallion that all of the sudden changed her religion to Wicca.  During one of our numerous EO classes, someone charged her with "...Kind of neat how you were Christian yesterday..." typoe of deal, and of course she broke down in tears and converted back to Christianity the next day.

1) I lost all respect for this "soldier".

2) This proved to me that it was trendy to be a wiccan.

The other soldier had viable (although I disagreed with the soldier) answers as to why he converted.  Most people I have run into that were wiccan seemed to be poor soldiers, and on shaky ground when it came to leadership.  In my opinion, these people were very gullible and easily swayed.  I did have one great soldier that was wiccan, and I never let my Christian views  get involved with work.

Also, take into account of a recent Air Force airman.  He was given an Article 15 (Non-Judiciary punishment) for splitting his tongue.  This was one of the 'rites of passage" to becoming a high priest in whatever he was in (The Air Force did not recognize his religion).

If you take a look around today, parents are taking a part in their children's lives less and less.  It seems that when they do so, it is more as a friend than a parent.  How many times have you seen 30-40 something women with teenage daughters dressing like them and acting like they are best frinds in the mall?  How many times have you seen teenagers cursing at their parents in public.  Watch Television, you will see what I am talking about.  Every 12 year old girl nowadays is a Britney SPears clone.  Kind of disturbing isn't it?  People are more worried about the Lexus SUV in the garage and the $300k home and all of the "stuff" more than they are about their children.  Next time you are in a good sized city, take a look around.  Notice how the lady in the SUV looks.  She is dressed like a teenager in knee pants and a tight shirt talking on her cell phone, ignoring her little girl.

Children have the right to choose what they want when they are old enough, but good parrenting will pay you back dividends when your children start making the right choices.

SAWGUNNER. Back in 1963 God was basicly banned from our great nation. Since then, too many kids have been raised in Godless homes, by Godless parents, educated in Godless schools, had laws made by Godless judges, and judged in Godless court rooms. The end result of all of this is the type of people you described. UHHHHHH, did I just describe the democratic party?  :P  :P . POWDERMAN.  :D  :D  :D  :D

That and WAY, WAY more.
Way too many people forget that G-d is the reason they are on this planet.
Too many people around me are more concerned about their mailing address and what car they drive.
It is still beyond me how these people have in abundance, while I slave away at two jobs (starting my third job tonight), am a volunteer firefighter and am barely making ends meet.
I guess the devil takes good care of his own......

RIFLERANGER. A few years ago A guy said to me, I hate people like you.I asked what kind of people he meant. He said, you God loving Christian types. He said, everytime something is wrong you blame the devil for it. I bet your old house needs work, I said yes, it does. I bet you got lots of bills, I said yes, I do. Then he pointed to my old truck and said, look at that wreck,I said it's paid for and does it's job. He pulled a wad of money out of his pocket and said, look at me, I got plenty of money, I got a new car AND truck, and I got a new house. Why isn't the devil bothering me? I looked him straight in the face, smiled, and said, cause he's already got ya. He left rather abruptly in anger. 2 months later he asked me to pray for his sick father. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D  :D  :D
