How many firings should I expect out of a 300 H&H case? I have heard that belted cases don't last as long. So far I am not loading the cases anywhere near max, just trying to see what load works best.

Hope this helps. only belted mag I have is a 7mm. Out of 200 original cases 16 gave up at 4 firings have approx 40 cases on 6 firings and going strong

I always thought that discarding the case before a fifth trimming was needed was a good rule of thumb.

You realize, of course, that a belted case headspaces on the belt and not on the shoulder. That's true for the first time you use the brass. After that, if you neck size only, it will headspace on the shoulder, meaning that the brass will be worked far less than it would be if you full length resize. You can expect your brass to last significantly longer if you neck size only.

It will also depend on what loads you are using. If you always load to the really hot mark, they'll destroy themselves in 4 or so loads. If you keep you loads to a mid-level load you'll find that the brass can last 20 or more loads, your shoulder will love you, and more than likely your accuracy will be much better.

There is really no shoulder on the .300 H&H case to headspace on. That's the whole reason H&H put the belt on there. It and the .374 H&H just really have precious little shoulder. All the rest of the belted magnums that followed were just copy catting and none of them really need the belt like the H&H rounds do.

Like has been said, case life is to a large extent a matter of how you load them. Hot and life is short. Mild and life is long.

I was researching this topic a little further and found a guy who has supposedly reseached this prblem and come up with a solution. His website is www.larrywillis.com. Any thoughts?
