converting .222 to a .223

My Dad past away just year and left me a remington bolt action .222 with a heavy barrel that he used for ground hogs . I would like to have it chambered for .223 (cheaper amm. I want to shot alot ) could a gun smith rechamber it or would I need to get a new barrel altogether????How much would it cost to do so..??

is the action long enough for the longer .223 cartridge?  I assume it's a M-700 or M-722.  Should be long enough but you might have to change the bolt stop or make some other modification. Rechambering should be a snap.

I have had several 222s rechambered to 223. The gunsmith just recut the chamber and charged me like 35.00 for the job.All I have had done have shot and functioned well.Good luck to ya,I am CAL......

Yes this is a very easy rechamber but why.  The performance difference is minor and the 222 is easy to load.  If economy is the reason, just reload the 222..  You will many times find the ammo you load if tailored for the rifle will outshoot the factory ammo..  Of course this could just be the ramblings of a diehard triple deuce lover..   But as I keep tell my lovely wife, 'I have cut back!!  I'm down to just the minimum number of 222's I need, only 4.'.  Yeah, I know, she doesn't really believe me either....  Good luck with the rifle..

the reson i want to goto a 223 is i can buy the ammo so cheap at the gun shows . I have so many hobbies now that my wife would kill me if i got into reloading too. the modle is 788 remington with a custom stock. would i need any other modifications other than having the chanber lengthened? the barrel is'nt a heavy barrel like i thought ..

I don't believe anything else need be done.   The rechambering should be quite easy...  I don't belive Remington blocked the mags differently on the 788's in 222 and 223.  Try a couple of loaded 223 rounds in the magazine to be certain they will cycle succesfully...  if not a new magazine would be in order.  It is possible to remove the blocks from fixed mags but the detachable magazines are a different story...   Sorry I don't have a 788 in 222 here right now... so am unsure about the mag.  good luck from the gunnut69
