Consider a bear that's big enough to do harm to a man, what's the SMALLEST diameter tree that bear can climb?

Since even a cub has sharp teeth, anything that will hold a bears weight that he can climb.

From beech tree scars in the Adirondak forest most that I have seen were 10-18".  But then piss one off and I would not hold on to that figure.  One climbed the ladder stand of the junior high principal last year and swatted his foot.  I have also seen many on the Outdoor Channel climb ladders and such.

Climbing a tree to get away from a bear is not he best plan if that is the plan.

tucoblue,

The bigger the bear the harder it is for them to climb but I have seen a large Brown Bear quite high in scrub pine in Alaska.  I have also seen a few large Black Bears climb quite high, over 10 feet off the ground, in trees of different sorts.  If you are going to climb a tree make sure you climb high enough the the limbs won't support the bear chasing you.     Lawdog

On two differant occasions have had Black Bears climb up into tree stands with us.  Gets interesting.

I was bowhunting the other day and my wandering mind went where it never did before. Last winter there was (Alledgedly) a bear sighting in the area I hunt. I'm sitting there with a bow and wondered what evasive action I would take if a bear decided to check me out. The only thing I could think of was to climb a four inch diameter oak tree and was wondering if a bear sizeable enough to do me harm could make it up that 4' tree.

You would be surprised at the amount of damage a 175 - 200 pound Black Bear can do.  At that size if you could climb the tree so could the bear.  Lawdog

you can forget it.  if you try to grab a tree, the bear will get you.   they make a squirrel look slow.   you are way better off standing your ground.   thinking anything else is just kidding yourself.
