I have a H&R topper model 158 in 22 hornet. I am curious if any of you handi gurus can tell me how old it is.The serial number starts with a AN. The barrel has the same serial number stamped into it .

perhaps this can help you Is there a list of serial numbers and manufacture date?
Mitch in MI posted December 12, 2003 10:33 PM
Look at the 2nd letter of the serial number.
(I'm pretty sure 1995 is J, 1994 H, etc)

K=1996
L=1997
M=1998
N=1999
P=2000
R=2001
S=2002
T=2003
You're looking for N or later if you want to be able to order the barrels marked with an asterisk on the accessory barrel page.

I suppose I should say that I don't know where I downloaded the file, but it is a 499k pdf on serial numbers for antique guns.

SERIALIZATION
This section is included to identify year of manufacture dates on Brownings, Colts (including 3rd generation Colt S.A. model numbers), High Standard, Mauser broomhandles, Parker shotguns, Remington (manufacture dates), Savage/Stevens model   information, Savage M-1899, selected Winchesters, and others. To use these tables, simply locate the Ser. No. of the above mentioned trademarks, locate the proper bracket it falls into by model, and refer to the adjacent year to determine the year of manufacture. In several cases, caliber rarity can also be determined.

My original intent was to locate the production date of a Parker shotgun I have, but I have been able to help on several other dating questions.
