Hello all, Just how good is the 30 herret. Is it surpassed by newer rounds? Is it worth the effort to form and reload? Opinions anyone? Regards, Byron

If you can get one that is chambered and throated properly, (rare with factory barrels) it's wonderful in a 10 inch barrel. Pretty much the same performance as the 30-30 with less powder and blast. Is it worth it to make the cases? If you enjoy that it's worth it. Use a form/trim die and a good powered trimmer or drillpress setup and case forming is no problem at all. The 300 Whisper isn't too far away performance wise, but the Herrett is better for reduced cast bullet loads due to the rim holding headspace. Just make sure you get a barrel with the throat centered on the bore or it's not going to be the best shooter.

I would also add that if you are going to a 14 inch barrel, you will do much better with a more standard round like the 30-30, 30-30 AI or even 7-30 if you don't have to have the 30 caliber. In fact, the 7-30 is starting to get more positive reports out of a 10 inch barrel as well. Like everything else, I guess it all comes down to what you are wanting to do with your barrel. It will do just fine for certain applications and barrel lengths, but you can do better in others.

Only you can decide "if it is worth it". If you like "all things Contender", that is reloading, case forming, tweaking loads, talking about all those things, then maybe the .30Harret is for you. If you aren't a "tinkerer " IMHO you should look elsewhere.

I bought my first .30 HERRETT in 1976, and the second in 1980 (10" and 14" respectively). I have about two hundred formed cases, and I haven't made a new one in 15 years. The Herrett is quite a bit ahead of the .300 Whisper, at least in my 10" barrels...125 grain BTips at 1950 fps and 2225 fps respectively. That's a difference of 320 fpe at the muzzle. But that said, the .300 is far easier to load for than the Herrett, and unless you want to shoot game at much over 100 yards the Whisper is fine. Less recoil and report too, although in 10" barrels the difference is not huge.

you might thank about the 7.62 x39 i have one from BULLBERRY and i love it it has a .308 bore so so you will have to load it your self it is so close to the 30 herret that you can use the same load data.

That is a dangerous assumption! Load data is certainly not interchangeable. For example, in Hornady max load data:

7.62 - 110SP - 19.8/IMR4227
.30H - 110SP - 25.1/IMR4227

7.62 - 150SP - 23.4/IMR4198
.30H - 150SP - 25.7/IMR4198

Obviously, using .30 Herrett maximum loads in the 7.62 would result in over-pressured loads, and in a T/C potentially unsafe ones. Using 7.62 data in the Herrett would result in under-poiwered loads. Always use loading data developed for the specific cartridge!
