what a can o' worms! I love my 25-06,also think highly of the 2 6mm's. HMM,even the 308, 243 ands 7-08 will do double duty. There are even a few wild cats you could try. The 25-06 is a fine choice if you don't care about the hides.Even a 22-250 will mess up a critter way out there.
I feel that a 14" barrel is minimum for rifle type cartridges(7-08,308, 243,etc).!0" is ok for 45 colt,44 mag types.I believe a 15" 7-BR barrel is all you need for deer on down.. A 24/26" barrel in 7 mag will take care of every thing else, except real BIG bears.

WildcatTC, Try a 257 weatherby mag. Don't know if it is a factory chambering or not. I really enjoy the round and have been thinking about an encore for traveling. I bet one of the barrel makers would chamber a barrel for you in that round. I would want 26". Regards, Byron

I can't make any suggestions on a rifle barrel as I don't own any but in pistol barrels I love my 7mm-08.  It is a 15" barrel and I don't even notice the recoil.  I have taken a deer at 40 yds with no problem and I spun a coyote around at 375 yds. (that was when I was shooting a lot...don't think I would be able to do it now though)

Lots of good choices out there...the fun is finding one that you enjoy.

Good luck.

I have an Encore barrel made by On Target Technology in a 1" bull that is 29" long in the .257 Weather Mag. on the way to me. Should be here by the end of the week.

When I tried the barrel on my frame the balance was great, weight forward, felt like an old muzzleloader and it can be held very steady. It is a very flat shooting round  and does a number on deer. I use the 100gr. Nosler BT's in my other bolt guns.

I think that your stated caliber of 25-06 is a good one.  I love the caliber and find that it is a good all-around performer, with the proper bullet choice for the appropriate game.  I have one in a Rem 700 with heavy barrel, and it is a fine, fine shooter.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

I'm not sure if your handloading, but if you are, I would nominate 1) 6.5swedish mauser 2) .257 roberts  If you aren't rolling your own I would say you are right on the money with the 25-06. As you can tell I'm kinda partial to the somewhat less than mainstream cartridges, but hey what can you do? :D

One of the best double duty calibers out there for light skinned, deer sized game and varmints is the 6MM/.243. There are many ways you can go with it also from strictly commercial loadings such as .243Win, 6MMRem, and .243WSSM to a large number of full custom, hand loading only, 6MM rounds. BullBerry alone lists 14 6MM/.243 chamberings and I can think of another 5 smiths without much trouble. Since you are shooting an Encore you are free to choose just about anything you wish from anyone including the JDJ customs.
Things you need to consider are; cost of shooting. A long session over a PD city can really burn up powder and at $10 per 20 for plain Jane .243Win that could get expensive real quick. I use the .243Win because that is about the least expensive commercial ammunition out there. There is also the cost to you physically. Most of us hairy chest, shooters like to think that many hundreds of rounds of .25, .30, or even larger caliber rounds at a session won’t effect our shooting, well it will, and it does. The .6MM/.243 is about as small/big as you can get to cleanly kill deer sized game, and shoot long varmint sessions and still be able to use your arm to drive yourself home. There are things you can do to dampen out that recoil from the bigger calibers but it seems to me the whole idea behind the TC/Encore is “handiness”.
As for a pistol barrel you can’t go wrong with the .308Win or the 3006 for strictly commercial loadings but I’d opt for a .257Roberts or .25WSSM some commercial loaded stuff but mostly a hand loaders game.
Love those .41s'

If you reload I would recomand the .257 AI. With the liter bulles in .25 cal., you can push them a hair faster than with the .25-06. With the heaver bullets the .25-06 has a slight edge in velosity, but with the .257 AI you use alot less powder and the case is inhearently alittle more accurate. As for the handgun barrel, I have a .357 max., 15 in. Bullberry, that shoots sub. moa 5 shot groups. Great combo for hunting from a stand, but worthless for off hand hunting. It`s a good 150 yrd. gun, is you use a range finder you can strech it to 250 yrds. with alittle practice.

Go for the 6.5 swede. I have a VZ-24 action that I'm planning(more like dreaming)on barrelling with the swede to be THE sporter rifle to replace my trusted Mod.70 '06.
Good luck
