RB from lead from jacketed bullets?
« on: October 26, 2004, 05:08:11 PM »
I have an odds 'n ends assortment of jacketed bullets of various calibers just going to waste sitting on the shelves.  Not enough of any one type to bother to try to do anything with them.

I cast roundballs for my muzzleloaders.

If I toss all of the old jacketed bullets in the melting pot and float out the jackets, is the lead contained in the jacketed bullets good for roundball?

Or, is there some alloys or something in the jacketed bullet lead that would make it unsuitable for roundball use?

Seems like a waste to me, but it'll work.

I hang on to all my drips and drabs because there is no telling what will come into my hands next. Even ten bullets leftover from years ago will give me an idea whether to buy another box.

I did that with handgun bullets that were dug ont of a target range hillside. I got them at a yard sale and the guy told me that he was getting out of casting. IMO, it was pure lead and soft as butter.  I used it for other than round ball but it was still good lead.

This is the key here. Started casting for blk-pwder in 1981. If the lead is too hard the patched ball is highly accurate but almost impossible to load.
