FINALLY.....Blood on my Huntsman
« on: October 27, 2004, 03:13:33 AM »
Well after a disasterous trip to eastern OK in which I went out on Friday night and turned around and left on Saturday morning which was opening day here (WASHOUT!) I finally took a 84 lb. doe with my Huntsman about 6:30 yesterday evening. She and her yearling stepped out to the corn about 6:20 or so and I waited until she gave me a quartering away shot and nailed her with a 240 gr. HornadyXTP in .50 sabot over 90 gr. 777. I had been shooting the Powerbelts 295 gr. Aerotip and thought I had them sighted in, but I shot at her with one of them on Sunday evening and missed and then shot at a small buck on Monday morning and missed again, so I made a run to Wal-Mart and picked up the Hornadys and sighted in and was on for this shot. Apparently my gun got out of whack during the trip to camp on Friday. I had planned that trip for weeks and was really excited about it, supposed to be real good hunting there and I had never been. Got there about 5 p.m. and barely got my tent set up before it started pouring down rain so I grabbed my bucket and ran in and sat down to wait it out. Well this was a borrowed tent that I had used before and had no problems with in the past but it leaked like crazy this time. Before the rain was over the floor was puddled up right where I had intended to put my air matress, probably about three gallons of water came in from about four different places and had puddles in about eight different places. So my bud and I got all that dried up and was going for the pump and matress when it started again so we ran into his camper and after about twenty minutes it let up again and I ran to my tent only to discover that we had left the front door open in our haste, wet again. By now it was about 8 p.m. and I had been up since 4 a.m. so I was getting a bit tired and spent. So we got all that dried and then the rain started again. This time we got the door closed and had gotten a tarp spread over the side where we supposed the rain was coming in from but to no avail. So after this shower I just dried as best I could and got the matress in and went to bed. I was soaked to the bone and got changed and in the bed around 9:30. Traffic stayed steady up and down the entrance road until about 3 or 4 a.m. and it rained off and on all night and when I finally did decide to try to salvage my hunt I discovered someone else hunting at the spot I had chosen. So after watching Jeeps, 4 wheel drives, cars, 4-wheelers, and every other kind of vehicle imaginable running all over the prime public hunting land I was on, I packed it up and came home.
I have been given permission by a friend to hunt on his 90 acres where there is noone else so that's where I headed Sunday morning and that's where my doe came from......what the heck was I doing 100 miles from there on public hunting land filled with people??!! Well ya know the allure of a hunting trip to somewhere you've never been I guess. 8)
Took off work for Mon., Tue., and Wed., this week just so I could hunt the MZ opener and have a few days extra to bag one and I gotta admit I was starting to wonder if it was going to happen or not. But after a horrifying trip to the public land, two missed shots, getting rained out for Monday afternoon's hunt, and the threat of rain all day yesterday, I managed and now I have a doe hanging at the processors waiting to get packed and brought home to my freezer.....and eventually.................

Needless to say, I'm a Happy....uh....non-camper. :)  :D

Glad to hear you got one Lik2hunt.  Where were you hunting at?

I went over by Buffalo with a friend this weekend to hunt the BP opener.  There's some BIG MULIES out there.  Saw some too, just none close enough.  I ended up shooting a fork mulie Saturday night with my CVA.  It was an 80 yard facing shot, hit him in the base of the throat. He was DRT.  Good eating buck too.  Me and the kids had the tenders Monday night for supper.

Good luck with the rest of your season.

Great story likhunt, but I'm glad I read about it and did not expierence it !! :rain:  :rain: and more  :rain: !!! Look at it this way, it led to a great,  if not happy story, one you be able tell for years to come. You might even be able to get to laugh about it someday. Sort of like boot camp, not to much fun at the time, but it leads to memories that last a lifetime...

Happy to see you got one. What is your next plan of attack?....<><....

Hey lik2hunt

Great story.....  I'm glad to hear that you were able to take a deer after all that.
Me and a buddy took today off as he want to hunt this public land someone had told him held a bunch of deer.  Well we got into the woods before sun up and setup where it look good lots of tracks and a nice scrap.
Well everything was looking great until the sun came up and then all heck broke loose.  Here comes about thirty horses and about fifty fox hounds.
Man it sounded like the world was coming to an end.  What the heck is with the guy blowing that darn horn. (I hope all their dogs gets fleas)  Well to say the least didn't figure there would be any deer in that area for a while. So we headed for the local Ihop for breakfast.  So we had a great breakfast and heck mervin paid the tab.  Then we head home and we are now sitting around drinking a few cold ones.

Wlscott - if you check your doe area map in the regs I was just inside the 75 border to the east in the green area in Bryan county. A throat shot at 80 yds? Good shootin' there buddy. Didn't know you had any mulies up there in the panhandle, kinda makes a guy think.......would I have to camp out if I came? :-D

MSP - It is starting to take an a whole new perspective even as I write this. Gonna let the area rest until the weekend now and slip in and try to fill my buck tag then.

Dave - The place where I hunted last year and where I thought I was gonna have to hunt this year is public land also about 30 minutes from my home. Not too bad during archery season but as soon as MZ and rifle season start it looks like a Wal-Mart parking lot there at about 7 a.ma. every morning. The deer ain't stupid either, they know when traffic gets thick and they starting hearing loud booms and their buddies start disappearing that something is up. Sure am appreciative of my friend's kindness to let me hunt on his land.

Mac - Bugs!!?? Oh you mean the skeeters that sound like helicopters coming in for a landing on your face......gonna get a freeze soon and they'll be history. Until then I just have to deal with 'em I guess, unless I wan to get busted again because of my earth scent bug spray......smells like dirty Deet...not much cover to that.

Yeah, I guess I let the mulie out of the bag

We've got a pretty decent population of mulies out here.  In fact, I've shot more mule deer in my life than I have whitetails.

Mac - Wlscot is out in the Panhandle of Oklahoma, or what we SE Okies refer to as "no man's land".  :-D    :)

I COME FROM THE DESERT!!!   Yeah, it's pretty desolate out here.   But there's quite a bit of game if you know where to look.  Lot's of sage brush pasture, mixed with wheat, corn and milo fields (irrigated and dry land).  Makes for pretty big deer.  Also a lot of coyotes and bobcats.  I actually hunt coyotes more than anything else.

I've talked to Lik2hunt about doing a swap for hogs out there where he is, and him coming out here, but I just haven't gotten around to doing it YET.  We will someday I'm sure.  Mac, I'd be glad to talk to you too.......

That sounds good....I'm planning on heading down Like2hunt's way this spring to try for a hog or 2...and sure would love to have a crack at one of those mulies as well....the problem I face...and a lot of others too...is the public land...the bulk of it in my state...is dense harwood forest...and like like2hunts adventure...is loaded with folks using off road vehicles and such...that you have to go a real long way to find any decent spots, and then there's no gaurentee that it will remain that way...and the owners of most of the huntable private ground...either want a fortune to hunt it...or it's already leased out...and others simply say NO...I know I'm not the only one that faces this...and got real lucky last year with the 10 pointer I took off of public ground...but as soon as word got out about it...there were 5 times as many guys scouting and camping this year over last,it's sorta like fishing...you catch a lunker bass...and 5 boats show up...and start casting all over you  :x   ......it's just getting harder and harder as each year passes.....I've knocked on so-many doors my knuckles looks like feet...and logged more miles on my jeep than you would believe just trying to locate suitable areas to scout...and here's the funny thing...I just read an article in this months on-line conservation site...and they say that out-of-state hunters has increased 500-600% over last season...sooo that makes it even more difficult....I'm afraid that sooner-or-later...hunting...as all "sports" will become only a rich-mans game...unless you own enough property and improve it for the animals...
