Looking for a good place to hunt Pheasant ???

I'm looking for a place to hunt Pheasant. I'd like to find a place within an hour or so drive from the Syracuse area. Anyone have any good places they want to share?

Hunter I am a bit further away more like 2 hours North but we have a great piece of state land they turn pheasant out on every year.  I get over there when I can, but never seems to be enough time.  I would be glad to take you there and do soem hunting if you would want to travel this far.

New York Hunter,
The last time I saw a pheasant was at the NYS Fair grounds in the 4H exhibit.  There was a cage full of chicks the kid were raising for later release.  Gosh almighty, can't tell you the last time I saw one around the central NY region that wasn't stuffed on display!

Uh, yea...  Three Rivers WMU in Baldwinsville/Lysander area is probably THE most popular spot in these parts to hunt stocked pheasant. Check here for other stocking sights throught the state. http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/wildlife/pheasant/rnpstock.html

What type of dog do you plan on hunting with, or are you going to go it alone?

bubba, I wouldn't mind driving that far, 81 to 411 to 37 or 81 to 12 to 37, I've been to the "Burg" many times!!! :grin:

Well sense you asked, I'm working with my chocolate Lab. I'm starting kinda late (ok really late) with him. He'll be 4 in January. I don't know if he will workout or not. I was thinking about getting a new dog and training him, but some of the people I've talked to told me to try him first. I guess only time will tell.

I am just  outside the burg about 7 miles. If you can get to the burg  I can meet you and we can go from there

You don't know until you try. He could be a natural born hunter. Last year while pheasant hunting, I met an older guy with a springer spaniel. That dog was incredible at finding/flushing birds. I watched him locate birds that other dogs had just walked right by.The owner told me the dog didn't have any training.  He just took the dog out one day and started hunting him.

Every NY stocking program I saw over the years, was a total goat rope!
Clowns shooting birds off trucks as they were released. One guy up from the city was arrested for shooting a pheasant in a condo complex in Carmel, where I once lived.
After a while, I called the local DEC office (New Paltz). They were only too happy to provide me with a list of reputable shooting preserves...DEC
recommended. We settled on a place in Goshen.. It's been some years,
and I've since left the sprall for North Carolina, but for about 60 bucks a piece, my son and I were allowed 6 birds, and whatever holdovers we could shoot in a mornings hunt. It was guided with dog. I wouldn't do it all the time.. But I now do it once a year even here in NC. I think it is well worth it, and you avoid the urban cowboys... Try the DEC list!

I agree with you to a certain extent. While there certainly is no shortage of "truck chasers" out there, that doesn't mean you have to hunt that way. There are enough birds that survive the onslaught of "green truck chasing urban cowboys" that the true sportsmen who don't/won't hunt while birds are being stocked are still successful. At least that is the case where I hunt.
 
The problem with some of the hunting preserves is that in an effort to guarantee clients a huntable population, they will release birds just prior to the hunt. To my way of thinking, that's not much different than chasing a stocking truck. I'm sure not all of them operate this way though.  
 
Personally, I think the DEC should close hunting one day a week to allow birds to be stocked, and give them some time to get acclimated before they are hunted.
 
The sad part of it all is that with the loss of habitat and the increase in population of coyotes and fox, NY State will probably never again see huntable numbers of wild pheasant.
