our doe season opens tommorrow here (called a t-zone hunt). anyhow, i have been practicing with my 4.5 superblackhawk. out doing one last test fire tonight and the damn ejector houseing and rod fly off. luckily i found it all.

but what really is chaffing my hide is that the damn thing started throwing EVERYTHING way left. i make a sight adjustment, and it is good for a few shots. then, she starts throwing left. make another adjustment, it's good. a few shots, %%#@* thing starts hitting left again. it is the standard factory sights i am using, and it isnt the sight that is moving. it is cranked all the way right and i dont dare go anymore. what the hell is going on?
the only thing i can figure is maybe the barrel needs to be tightened? doesnt really matter, it has to go to ruger to get fixed anyhow. i am just bummed that i cant use this gun because i have been exclusive to it for a few months now. i tryed my 7.5 incher and it aint sighted in for my cast bullets so i am screwed there, too.

at this point i have two options. one is say screw the handguns and take the 44 rifle out. but this wont shoot my cast worth a hoot, so it will be strictly factory bullets(which it shoots very well), i wanted to take one with bullets i made. or option two; unchain the 454. the down side to this is i just havent shot it much lately. i was planning on using that ruger. :evil:

what is it they say about the best laid plans?

at this point i am thinking the rifle gets the job. i dont know, but i still have about 12 hours to chew on it.

I thought that Ruger barrels were screwed on in the direction to where they try to tighten as the bullet enters the rifling. Sounds like a weird problem to me. You might could mark the barrel and frame fit with something and shoot it a few times to see if the barrel is actually moving. I would also check the base pin to ensure its nice and tight.

What ever it is it really sucks.

I know how you feel, Just got my 629 Classic sighted in with the Speer 200gr. GDHP and all of a sudden the action has got REEEEEL SMOOOOTH, I mean like I just sent it off for an action job. BUT... now I'm having misfires using CCI and Win primers. Federals seem to work OK, but it's still in my mind that I'll have a misfire, especially as it gets colder.
I was going to use it along side my H&R 44mag. Rifle, but now I'm not so sure. :x
So it looks like we are in the same boat.

sorry to hear that.

the plot thickens: i just talked with my dad. a while back i gave him a 10 1/2 inch sbh and he just loves it. i told him what happened tonight, and wouldnt you know the same thing happened to him about 8 months ago. gun kept throwing everything left. he would make an adjustment and get a good group, then it would start hitting left again. and the ejector rod housing came off (the screw sheared right off) he sent it to ruger and they fixed it. bad thing is they didnt bother to tell him what had happened, or how they corrected it. but i think it is nuts that he had the EXACT symptoms as me. two different guns i bought with the exact same problem. what are the odds? you can bet i will get the skinny from ruger about the problem. still rubs me raw.

Been telling you guys for years them Ruuuuugggggeeeerrrr's ain't tough enough to handle those hot loads. :-D :-D :-D :-D

Seems ta me a real handgun hunter should have at least a half dozen of them ready to go on a moments notice. I sure do. My only decision is which to take the next day. Take the .454 and let it have some fun.

yeah, i have all kinds of handguns ready to go. but only the 454 has bullets i cast for it, and is sighted in for them. the only thing that concerns me is that it has been a few months since i have shot it. although i just might do it anyhow. :lol:

I had that happen with my Colt Anaconda just after I bought it. The barrel was unscrewing. I could unscrew it with my hand. Peened the surface the barrel seats to and used lock tite and it never did it again. KN

I have several Ruger's in 44MAG and 454 Casull. I have Never had one problem. I reload my Redhawks to max levels and have for years and they are still functioning great. You will find in all brands crap happens.

i am thinking this is on the lines of what is going on. why would the ejector housing in both cases come off as the problem is devolping? the only answer i can come to is that the barrel is moving. going to call ruger now and see what they say.

Are the first few shots accurate and then it gets worse as the barrel heats
up? If yes, Take out your cylinder and inspect your forcing cone area.
to see if the back part of your barrel has split. some splits can be hard to spot. Color the very back of your barrel with a felt tip marker(not a permanent marker),
wait 10 or 15 seconds then wipe the ink off. some of the ink will remain in the crack and make it easier to spot. I have seen something like what
you have described and a split barrel was the culprit.

i checked after seeing your post and i cant see any kind of crack. it doesnt matter now as it is enroute to ruger as i type this. they can figure it out. i wrote a nice letter asking for them to let me know what it is they find with it. if and when i find out, i will post it here.

Seems to me that I had a similar problem two years ago. I have a .44 mag in super blackhawk with a 10 1/2 " barrel. I didnt notice the barrel was unscrewing at the range because I was using a red dot sight but when I got home the front sight was duly in the 11 o'clock position and the ejector rod housing was almost twisted, off the screw was in fact bent. I sent it back to ruger with 13 days remaining to opening day in they had it back in ten. Good as new and completely gone through.
