Need your help.
« on: October 28, 2004, 12:13:47 PM »
Ok, I have a buddy at work who annoys me sometimes because he tries to state (quite frequntly) as fact what is only his personal opinion.  A lot of times this takes place in relation to bow hunting.   I may not be an expert, but I pay attention and read a lot.  He may have been bowhunting for 20 years, but has harvested only a few deer.  So while I try to take him seriously, a lot of times I find him trying to blow wind.  So I want you folks to chime in with YOUR experience and opinion so I can see if he is really lost or not.  Specifically we were talking about Split Limb bows.  I know some people like em, some dont care for em.  I told him I was purchasing a split limb bow and all heck broke loose......"AW that thing is junk, garbage, cr*p."  I asked him why he thought so.  "Cuz after a year them limbs will be all twisted and shot to s**t and will be useless."  He continued on "thats why most 3-D and tournament shooters hate emI know Ive talked to lotsa guys who shoot tournaments."  Now to begin with I suspected his whole "talked to a lot of guys who....." cuz I doubt he knows ANYONE who shoots tournes.  Add to that the fact I could swear I seen a few split limb bows at the tournes they show on TV (like Buckmasters and such.)  Also, Ive had a few of you guys tell me there is nothing wrong with Split limbs, one of which shoots tournes!  And when I pointed out that the guys at the Pro Shop me and him went to earlier this summer BOTH had split limb bows he said "thats cuz they work at a place that they can afford em!) (like working for an independantly own sporting goods store offers 6 digit salary   .)

And the next biggest thorn in my side is his whole "ya CAN NOT kill a deer on the ground unless your arrow is going faster then 180 fps!"  I told him he was lost there, big time.  "Ive had 2 deer jump my arrow when I shot my old bow from the ground, thats why I got my super fast Martin." (which, by the way, he refuses to shoot past 20 yards.)  I asked how them recurve stick shooters could do it, but a compound shooter cant!  That just got him going crazy though.  Its my contestion that deer jump the string for 1 or both of a reson....1) they react to your bow twanging when you fire it which means you have a noisy bow.  2) you shot from a mid range distance while the deer was looking you square in the eye.  But he swears he has statistical computer software that proves this and that......but I aint seen no proof.
So can you guys help me out?  If this goes good Im printing this topic and showing it to him.  once again, my intentions are not to impose changes of his opinion.  I just want him to stop stating as a fact what he THINKS is the answer, especially when he is giving advice to new/beginning archers.
Thanks,
Brian

Can't really help ya that much (sorry   ) except for the fact that I've never heard that whole thing about split limb bows. You should ask him to use common sense. If the split limb bows do what he says they do...then why do they continue to produce them? Is this that same guy who shot the deer in the dark and all that other crap not long ago? If that's the case I know a few like his type...I just "yes" them to death then lmao later. That's all ya can do. No use tryin to waste your breath over him because he'll never change. Just blow it off. But...that's my :money:. Take care!  :D

As far as the split limb BS he is slingin you may print this off for him. I have shot pro 3D for 6 years now and have many bow companies after me to shoot for them. Ive shot split limb bows for many years and even have one that Ive had for 4 years now and it shoots as well as the day I purchased it. Yes when they first came out some of them had a little problem with limb timing but that was QUICKLY corrected!!!

Now as for the speed thing. A deer can most certainly jump a string at 180fps or below but you are correct as far as the why they would succeed in jumping it. I started out MANY years ago with stick and string and I highly doubt I was anywhere over 170 and killed MANY deer.

I do think you are compleatly correct in thinking this guy is just a blowhard and he is definatly talkin out his a$$ because that about all he knows is crap . If you need any help, my email is on my profile on here.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of archery.
Lynn

Thank you Lynn, I knew you would tell it like it really was   .

I posted another topic along the same lines in the muzzelloader forum (yup he even has his mind set on those things too.)  Fortunately the guys got me cooled down.  I guess Im just being too hard on the guy and taking him too seriously.  I once told my buddy when he was being extremly frustrated by him that "just dont take him serious and realize he might just be a little kooky is all."  Guess I should take my own advice.  I still dont want any more advice from him, but I guess Ill ease off.
anyways, thank you gents.

I've been bowhunting going on 25 years now and have never shot a bow that pulled more than 54# and most likely around 180 FPS. I personally have never had a deer "jump the string" but then I try to shoot at relaxed  deer when they are facing away from me. On the other side of the spectrum I know guys who shoot some of the fastest bows on the market and have had deer "jump the string".
Just another worthless opinion!!
