Has anyone tried the peep sight that NEF has on thier store site? Does it fit in all the newer handi rifles? If so do you also have to change the front factory sight to shoot in the 50-150 yard range. I have a scope on mine now but would like to try a peep sight. I just have the 22 in barrel model although I have ofter considered adding the BC barrel. Thanks. Oh How does it mount? On the scope mounting holes?

The Williams peep sight mounts directly to the last pre-drilled hole for the scope rail, as seen on the Buffalo Classic model. You can use this with either the front sight that is on the 22" 45-70 barrel or change it out eith a Lyman 17A globe sight.

In Junior Doughty's website http://www.castbullet.com/shooting/1871.htm he shows just what his sights were. There is a good picture of both the Williams rear peep sight with a front Firesight. Check out this read before you purchase a front globe sight etc.... sure makes that 22" 45-70 a great low light deep woods gun.

Would it be possible to use the peep on a pistol caliber barrel such as 44 or 357? Or would it need to be a different height for the different ballistic characteristics of these rounds? Or would the front sight be the one that needed to be a different height? Peep sighted 357 or 44 with a Lyman globe up front for long range plinking sounds like fun...

Nixter, I don't see why the same Williams peep sight wouldn't work for handgun calibers as well. I have seen and used peep sights on Winchesters and Marlin lever action rifles that were chambered in 357 mag, 44-40, 44 mag and 45 Colt.

Now I can not tell you where the drop off point is gonna be with the 44 mag or 357 mag cartridge. But I'm sure if you put a Williams peep sight on your Handi-Rifle you will be very happy with the results.

I'm gonna play around with my Ultra and remove the scope to see if the Williams peep sight that I have off of my Buffalo Classic will work. I can't use the rear barrel sight as it sits too low out on the barrel with the high cheek rest. BUT :eek: where the Williams mounts it sits higher over the chamber.

I figure, what have got to loose over trying this out, but time and will have fun shooting as well. :-D

I have been thinking about using one for my new 45-70.

I have a peep and firesight on a cut down 357 barrel.(16-1/4") I can keep a dozen shots in 6 inches or so at 100 yards with it!!! I wear glasses and bifocals too!! I amaze myself with it!!!

I just finished the swap out putting the Williams peep sight on my 22" barreled 45-70. I will use my current front sight as the tester sight, since these 22" barrels are not dovetail cut for a front globe sight.

I will be going to the range later and will try and scan my targets for 25 and 50 yards. I don't need any more than that for the woods anyways.

Range Report:

Well I prefer a scope on the Ultra 45-70 :lol:

Williams peep sight with regular front blade sight that comes with the barrel.

At 25 yards I had very nice grouping using a 405-gr over 15.0 gr of Unique with Fed 215 primers.

At 50 yards my groups were more spread BUT in the KILL zone. I held as close to center as possible... dang if that target didn't look fuzzy with open peep sights. Another problem was that the tube is dark with the target lit up at the end.

Now if that front sight was just dovetailed, I could knock the blade off and put a globe with inserts :roll:

I have the same sight set that Junior Doughty has on my Black Diamond muzzleloaders. I either shoot em without the aperature installed, using it like a ghost ring, or I install a Williams Twilight aperature. Makes a BIG difference.

I also have the Williams sight (GRS), but I find I can't enough adjustment out of the sight alone.....Ya gotta have a replacement front sight! I would like nothing better than to be able to mount a Lyman Mdl.17, or 20, globe on the little Handi.

Quicktodo...What have you done with your front sight when using the Williams Peep?
Does anyone make a front sight that will line up with the holes on the Handi, that will get you the elevation you need for 100yds? I've "pumped" it up there with 46.5gr IMR 3031 with a 490gr cast, (Lyman 457671) ..... and that ain't no picnic!
That little Handi can get down right ugly with that load from the bench.
I think a ramp, with a dove tail, then the globe, would be more height than the Williams would adjust for....Williams Dove tail base has a hole spacing of 9/16" (which is Remington spacing)..... there has got to be a way to put a globe on there. Any more thoughts on this would certainly be appreciated.
I have seriously been considering a Mid-Range Creedmore, set into the wood of the stock. I think Montanan had this done a few years back, and it certainly presented it's self well. I don't know how it actually worked but I suspect it was more than just okay.

Russ, the shorty ramp #796367, will fit my .45-70, screw and all. You would just need to figure out how high a fire sight rifle bead you need, they come in 7 sizes from .250" to .450". There's a sight combination chart and front and rear height relation procedure on page 18 in the Williams catalog above to determine which front sight to use. I have a scope on my .45-70, but I have the shorty ramps on my TC black diamonds and have an extra ramp that I tried on the .45-70, so that part I know fits, just don't know the correct rifle bead height that will work. The rifle beads can be found at Midway using fire sight rifle bead in their search feature. The shotgun shorty ramps take the .250" wide N beads. You also might be able to call Williams for their assistance.

That and the 250N fire sight bead should work for ya, it's much lower than the factory sight on my .357 max which is ~.500 high, the 1/8" shorty and 250N bead height is .285". If it's too low, you can always get a taller bead. I had to go that route when I put the WGRS sights on my black diamonds, the factory front sight was just too high.

The shotgun shorty #47450 should work for ya too, it appears to have a wider base and would be more stout. Don't know it the screw size is the same as the Handi, though.

The problem with the Ultra stock is that the check rest sits too high to comfortably use a barrel sight or the Williams peep sight. It can be done but its not what I prefer.

I have both the peeps that NEF sells the GPRS and the micrometer adjust one. With a .22hornet front blade on my .357 it'll shoot 2 or 2.5" groups at a hundred yards with the .357 front blade you can't get enough elevation I like them.

Okay as you know I tried the peep sight on the Ultra 45-70 but not liking getting my check way down on the rest almost to the corner of my eye, I changed out that Williams peep for the rear sight from my Remington 700 ADL. I couldn't use the front sight from the ADL because it over hangs the front of the barrel.

But with the rear ADL sight I get not only plenty of clearance but very acceptable accuracy for deep woods shooting at both 25 and 50 yards. I did not try it at 100 yards because I don't hunt with it at that range anyways.

Just thought I would report my findings.
