Is the 375JDJ worth $200???
« on: October 28, 2004, 06:23:59 PM »
I've been bidding on the same damned 14" barrel for almost a month now!  On E-bay, a guy has his reserve for all FOUR of his 375JDJ barrels set at $200.  They are NIB, but are they really worth it??

I'm almost willing to pay full price to Ed since this guy wants so much for his on Ebay

How much is Ed asking?

So what's the problem?   Pay the man $200 if you really want a factory 375JDJ off Ebay, or save $5 and buy one from Ed (who BTW has a used one for $165).   Factory barrels in the JDJ are so new out that it will be a while before used ones start tuning up.   Ed's a great gent and has made me some really great deals over the years.   Case in point, my 4th SSK 375JDJ would have been close to $600 new from JD, but Ed got me a LNIB top drawer SSK for hundreds less (and matching 257, 6.5 & 309JDJ's to go with it).   Saved me well over $1000 on that deal.   I don't buy factory barrels much anymore, but if I did, Ed would be the first gent checked.

FWIW:
Ebay is just there, use it or don't, but if you're going to play you need to be street wise on it now days.    At way over a million members worlwide, its all about suppy and demand there with a bunch of "auction fever" tossed in by all the new unexperienced newbies AND a certain percentage of greedy sellers taking advantage of it.   As for the seller in this case, keep in mind that his Ebay and PayPal fees are getting pretty steep, so padding a $200 item a few bucks is reasonable.   You have to know when to go for it, and when to walk away for Ebay  to be a useful tool.   The days of almost every item being a "good deal" are long gone - years ago.    Even so, just since 9/30 I have bought 37 auctions on Ebay - just over $1200 worth that were good deals, and I got fair prices for the 6 sold for around $250.    Nearly eight years there with thousands of good transactions buying and selling keeps me going back.

Either way, enjoy that 375JDJ.   Got my first one in the 70's and they are a lot of fun.

1. If you are going to buy a contender barrel on the retail market and Ed has it in stock, there's no point in wasting any time looking elsewhere. He has the best business manners and pricing you're going to find. Of course if your brother-in-law wants to part with one for super cheap or some other unusual circumstances exist then that's a different story.

2. ebay can be a great thing but you have to figure in the risk, associated costs (e.g. Paypal, shipping, etc) and perhaps your time. I use it all of the time. For example just last week I purchased a NIB item that Grainger industrial supply lists for $439.50 - my ebay cost was $66! How much time and frustration are you willing to endure to save $5?

3. Lastly, I like custom barrels  :-)

Oh, and BTW: I'm not associated with Eds' TCs even though the name might suggest so.

I have bought from ED in the past and the deals where great.
The only Bad thing I can say about him is: he is very tough to get in touch with it is a hit or miss thing. His t/c business is a side job. once you get intouch with him he is a great person to deal with

Yup!!! You can trust getting a fair deal and prompt service from Ed. I've done several trades and purchases with him over the past 5 years or so and complete confidence in sending him funds and getting back product exactly as described.   ----Regarding the T/C factory .375 JDJ barrels, how do they compare to SSK's in actual use? I'm a biased SSK owner so I'm not the one to give an opinion---But I suspect the twist may be different. Any body out ther know??? :D  pg
