No it was'nt with a crossbow.
« on: October 28, 2004, 10:23:27 PM »
WI T zone hunt going on right now today was the first day. Archery, Gun or muzzle loader can be used. We I shot a small doe tonite with my 30/30 94 using one of my handloads for it. One shot one Kill. It was not a huge deer but I like to tease my friend in Texas telling him that our small deer rival their large deer. Of course that always gets a rise out of him but he did admit southern deer are smaller for some reason? That true guys I do not know I have never hunted down south. One tag down and 3 more to go my regular gun tag and a T zone tag and my archery tag. I can use the T zone tag and my gun tag in the 3 days I have left to hunt if I want to fill them. I would at least like to fill the T zone tag and use my gun license for black powder season after the regular season but that depends on the weather if we got a lot of snow I doubt if I could handle it walking in the deep snow. Still want to use my crossbow to fill the archery tag also but have some time to do that. I will concentrate on that the week before our gun season the deer should be in the rut yet and hopfully I can get a shot that connects.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Well it was not a monster Gary but I shot a 5 point Fri evening with my Encore 308 Pistol. Shot him in the neck as I was using a cast bullet load and not sure on how it would work so I figured a neck shot would drop him. It did like a ton of bricks but then as I walked towards him he lumbered off but not well. I could tell he was hurt bad as he would go a few yards and lay down again and when I would try to get close for a other shot he would move again for a couple of yards and lay down again. It was getting dark and a storm was coming in so I wanted him down. So I put a other in the neck and that put him down for good. A couple of other hunters helped me get him out of the woods so that was nice as I told them I was disabled. That is why I could shoot a buck in a T zone anterless only hunt as disabled permit holders can shoot either buck or doe. Well now it is back to the crossbow and the muzzle loader as I will not shoot any more with a modern gun this season and since I have not killed a deer yet with a muzzle loader will use that for the regular season and the muzzle loading season and if I do not get any thing else I am satisfied this year as the last couple of days have been lucky. I do wonder about the cast load in 30 cal if a jacketed bullet in a more powerful load would have put him down for keeps the first time though he was hurting bad I could tell that buy the way he kept wanting to lay down. I do not have any qualms about using cast in a larger caliber but never used a 30 cal cast until now. I guess from now on I will stick with jacketed factory loads or reloads that equal factory as I can shoot factory loads with out no recoil problems. The only reason I used the cast loads is I had the gun sighted in for them and I had some on hand. I got the buck but was a bit concearned about him getting up again after a neck shot that was dead center in the middle. Though the second one did him in just like that. Jim

Congrat's again, big or small a buck is a buck....more meat in the frezz.
You have me lost when it come's too guns of any type as I have not used any as of 1972.

I had a 30-30, 308 Win, 20gage. couple 22's one over and under 22/410 but lost interest as never seemed to have the time to go hunting. My fault should have made time, sold them all and a few years later got into archery and have never looked back.

Still own a 22 cal and one small hand gun and that is it. Good Luck fer the rest of the season :)

Thanks Gary. This five pointer was a nice average size WI buck I suppose a year and a half or two years old. I like the guns and the archery hunting and I like to shoot guns for fun when not hunting. Got into reloading shooting cast because it is the only way I can afford to shoot except for 22's which are cheap.

Congrats on your Deer.  Keep up the good work.  Wish I could get fired up about rifle season, but after taking my first with a crossbow, I doubt that it happens.  May go out with my 54 cal.  if the mood strikes.  Best of luck to you the rest of the season.

Yea now that I have gotten meat in the freezer it will be the crossbow again when I can get out and the muzzle loader for the regular gun season and for the muzzle loading season if we do not have a ton of snow so I cannot get around.

My last "big" doe field dressed 91 lbs. My largest antlered buck, a 11pt. killed near Sonora Texas field dressed 112lbs. Pretty average for most of Texas. At least we can get 3 to 5 per season.

Yea 2 little ones equal a big one!   So as long as you can shoot several you are ahead of the game. Same here in WI we have more tags than we used to to fill also. Though I deer go a bit farther up the scale in size. After I read your post I saw where the farther north you go the larger the deer. Has some thing to do with battleing the cold ect.

Either that or overpopulation. Central Texas alone goes over 2.5 million.
