What is this?
« on: October 29, 2004, 02:23:08 AM »
A friend showed me this little rifle [.22], he aquired 25-30 years ago.  He wants to find out who made it.  It's about 30-32" long, it's a rolling block with a hammer.  On the side it says "The Brownie".  It has a serial number of 1xx.  On the side of the receiver, it has a little lid that is flush with the receiver, that you lift, and there is a small compartment that looks like it might hold some kind of lube[about a thumb nail full].  We both think the gun might have been made as a promotional piece for a seed, or food company.  I am thinking Stevens, Mossberg, Iver Johnson, or something like that.  The gun looks like it might have been made back in the 20's or 30's.  Can anybody here give me some help?  Thanks.

I'd have to see a picture of it.  But from the description, sounds a little like the design used by the Belgian Flobert rifles.

It's a Davenport, built in Norwich, Conn. from 1891 to 1910. They built mostly shotguns, but also some boy's rifles. These small rifles look much like the Hopkins and Allen, but they were their own manufacture. Davenport Arms was in business from 1880-1910.
 Hope this helps.
