Contender vs. NEF

I am debating as to whether to buy a custom barrel for my G2, or to buy a NEF???  How much more accurate is the G2???  Thanks.

As individual as guns are thats a tough question to answer. Look at it this way. One is a $450 plus gun that can be had with any number of chamberings and lengths that are user friendly and are typically very accurate. The other is a sub $200 gun that requires the owner to send in his gun to have different barrels fitted to the frame.....notorious for having somewhat rough bore and chamber but can be quite accurate.

If you are starting to lean more toward carbines in Contenders, like I am.....then it might be a good idea to invest in a Handi.  I plan on having both.  There are some Contender barrels that I just could not part with.  For instance....357 Max Carbine, and 10" 7TCU with iron sights and Unckle Mikes black nylon sling and black Pachmyr grips....this combo is such a treat to carry when hiking in rough terrain, and will get most any job done.  Also....10" 45/410 set up the same way....leave the choke out and I am ready for hot 45's or a shotshell in a pinch.  Cant do that with a Handi, but then....I can't shoot 30-06 or .308 Winchester in my Contender.  Also.....if you can find one....you can chamber a Handi Rifle for 35 Whelen and that is a big, big plus in my book.

...this is a very common debate, with emotions raging on each side of the issue.  i think it will be settled about the time the Ford vs Chevy and the .270 vs .30-06 debates will...and we all know when that will happen...

Good reply Chris.   As to your "debate" thingy.....

1.  I drive Ford trucks now, but drove Chevy for 30 years and who knows what next year.
2.  Jack O would roll over in his final resting place if I ever traded my 270 in on a '06.
3.  And when I go shooting, I don't take any golf clubs with me.

I own several Nef's and T/C's and don't really see this as a Ford vs Chevy automobile analogy. I think the T/C's have additional features the NEF's don't have and they have a corresponding higher price tag. The Encore has a far better trigger, ergonomics, more accessories and the process is easy to acquire a far longer list of calibers for extra barrels. NEF has a far lower price and you can buy an additional NEF for less than a T/C barrel. NEF in lower pressure calibers are fine - I have a 45/70 NEF action that sprung open due to a hot 45/70 load. No damage to shooter or observable damage to rifle but still give you pause for thinking.

Resurrected from five and a half years back. Haven't changed my mind. I have a very nice collection of TC Contender carbines. I don't own a NEF and don't plan to.
