Sold my Mossberg 22 mag and went straight for the NEF handi rifle in 223 with a bull barrel.

Been reading this sight for a while and making big plans but now it  seems I can't find all the good info on accurizing, trigger jobs, and that o-ring thing? LOL, I know ya don't owe me but could somebody take the newbie by the hand and post up a few links for me if you have them "HANDI".

Welcome to the club Jack...be sure to clean that thing up really good before ya shoot it....I mean really clean it....a little chamber polish wouldn't hurt it either.....do a search and there is alot of info on this site regarding the 223.....have fun!! :D

Jack, Welcome aboard! :D The trigger is by far, one of the easiest triggers I've done. The hard part is knowing what and how it comes apart and how to reassemble. I used Raynor's trigger hone instructions with the help of Perklo's instructions for R&R.

The "O" ring trick is just a 9/16"ODx 3/8"IDx3/32" thick neoprene "O"ring that you can get at a hardware store. Slip it over the barrel stud, then install the forend, tighten the screw just snug, don't compress the "O"ring. The idea is to partially free float the barrel. Sometimes it help, sometimes not.

Yeah, welcome. I bought my first Handi before I knew anything about this site. And because of it, I'm becoming a NEF enthusiast. I have too of them, a .17 HMR and a soon to be .243 Winchester that used to be a .44 Mag (new barrel aquired by trade and is in transit).  :D

Thanks a bunch. That's exactly what I was looking for.

I have to say though, I was pleasantly surprised by the trigger on this gun. Considering what I've read, I expected a lot worse, this is almost crisp already.

The clerk wanted to go get one still in the box but I insisted on the one I'd handled and tried. I like the stock, though not stained real fancy it is a laminate and the trigger felt better than a lot of guns I've bought new.

Thanks to the other gentleman for the cleaning advise as well. I'm not familiar at all with "bore polish"? Is this to prevent the cases from sticking?

The chamber polish is to prevent cases from sticking and failure to eject. Some have used metal polish like flitz on a spent case spun with a drill. I use a large bore mop/patch combo spun with a drill. I also polish the bore with JB non-embedding bore compound on a tight patch, about 40-50 passes thru the bore, changing the patch and adding more polish frequently. This decreases the amount of range time and shots to get better accuracy sooner. Happy shootin!  :wink:  Tim

As usual Quick has it down pat.. :agree: ..I've had one Handi that I could not remedy the sticking problem and ended up having it rechambered to a case that had a rim.....308 to a .307 Winchester...

Well I just walked in the house from a little range time with this new rifle. Unless I ever need some kind of assult weapon or something, I'll never buy another band.

I took your advice on cleaning, I never cleaned a brand new rifle this well before firing before in my life. Used that spray Gun Scrubber on every square inch of metal. Sprayed inside the bore and pulled paper towel patches through from muzzle to breach until they came out as clean as they went in. Kind of surprised how black that first one was.

Pulled through a couple to dry and then pulled through a couple with WD40 on them. Pulled a couple dry ones and then sprayed down the whole gun with Rem oil to clean up all the finger prints from being on display.

I read a post about nothing more than teflon reducing the trigger pull so I sprayed down the trigger mechanism from the hammer down and the trigger up with out any dissassembly. The whole gun was dripping with oil by now so I wiped every thing down with paper towel and then went to the air gun to blow out all excess oil from all in accessable areas and wiped down excess again. Repeated until there was no evident excess oil.

Installed a 3x12x50MM scope with see through rings. This put the center of the scope 2.25" above the center of the bore.

Set up the predator bench rest and a sheet of blank paper on a real estate sign at 25 yards.

Shot #1 about 40 clicks high and 16 clicks right, adjust.

Shot #2 about 10 clicks low and 8 clicks right adjust.

I was letting my son do the shooting at this range and he wanted me to take over for fine tuning, so I shot the rest.

Moved target to 50 yards and used black marker to make a few more spots about the size of a quarter.

Shot # 3, dead nuts verticle, and 6 clicks right. Adjust

Shot #4 , 3 clicks left adjust.

Next 3 shots at new "spot" for a group.

Shot #5 in the black at 10 oclock

Shot # 6, in the black at 10 oclock and half covering previous shot.

Pretty dang excited about this new rifle I've only fired 6 shots out of at this point. Don't want to screw the pooch now!

Shot #7, never should have walked up and looked at those other two. This one is in the black at 8 oclock but not touching the previous two.

Got out a quarter, couldn't see any hole  peeking out. Got out a nickle same thing.

Got out a dime, and just had a little tear peaking out. Folded all the paper back flat so show just the missing center and couldn't see any of the hole from under a dime laying on top of the last three shots from 50 yards. Shots 5,6,7 I've ever fired from a NEF Handi Rifle and same for this particular rifle. No O ring tricks or trigger work what so ever, YET!

$189 rifle? Yep, I'm a satisfied customer.

I have absolute confidence that 3rd shot would have knocked the center out of the first two had someone been there to slap the grin off my face after looking at the first two.

Does anyone have a ballistic coefficient for these 45 grain JHP Winchesters in the white box?

I need to go to Varmit Al's and run the trajectory chart for this thing now to decide exactly where I want it zeroed. Probably zero at 120 like everything else I own since that's the distance from the porch to the targets down on the range but I could set up for any where out to 200 if it makes sense to do so.

I found ballistic coefficients for 45 grain 223 bullets from about .15 to .202 in bullets from Hornaday, Barnes and Sierra. None of them looked exactly like the 45 grn JHP in these Winchester loads though.

On these trigger jobs, has any one tried drilling a few holes in the hammer to lighten it for improved lock time?

I've seen that on a few hand guns and since this action is similar...?

I left the extra spur extention off mine just for that reason. Doesn't seem to be any big problem to cock so far. Gloves might make a difference.

Welcome the the HAA (Handiholics addicts Anonymas) Handi Addiction website! :grin:   Except here we don't try to be cured.

I think you are right about the trigger.  I put one on mine anyway and it hasn't hurt the accuracy as far as I can tell.  Honestly, never tried it without it though.  I can cover 3, 100yd shots with a dime with my UV so I know it is more accurate than I am.


Keep shootin that puppy and it'll only get better.

Welcome to a growing crowd. I got my .223 Synthetic Superlight about a month ago. Got a 5/8" grouping this last week.

I only started shooting again about a year and a half ago with my 50 year old Mossberg .22, which by the way is an outstanding shooter. Since then I have picked up an SKS, Saiga, Savage .243, and have a Weatherby Vanguard on layaway. If I had known about Handi Rifles, I could have saved some money. I am enjoying mine so much that I am thinking about extra barrels, after market walnut stocks and such. For my purposes, the Handi seems to be just what I need. Like I said, too bad I didn't know about them in the beginning.

Im sorry I didn't spost this earlier :oops:

You wondering into dangerous ground with a Handi rifle...they are addictive to say the least( they should put warning lables on it  :wink: )...and I think you seeing that here...as I've told a-lot of my friends here on-line...and my friends off-line...these little rifles get into your blood...and you'll wind up trying to figure out ways of aquiring more of them...not just rifles...but the shotgun and muzzle loaders too...


With all you can do with them...it makes it harder to play around with your other ones you own...and once you truely get the Handi bug...you'll see just what I mean...
