loading 30-06 for Rem 7400

I've never loaded for an auto before and a buddy of mine just picked one up (used).  What I'm wondering is, do I need to stick to powders recommended for the Garand and is there a pressure/velocity that I should avoid going above?  I'm worried about slamming the action too hard with hot loads.

thanks,
Ian

For the 742, I started mid range and worked up to a load that would reliably cycle the action.  Comfortable shooting gun.  I started at mid range since I only had the auto to 'empty' the rounds.
