Howdy,

This forum liiks a little slow....I got a question, I've don't have and have never used rotating wing decoys. Are they any good? I saw one testimonial that a maufactuer used in their advertizing. After reading it I wonder how anybody ever killed a duck before they where discovered.
Anyway, great-good- or more hype?

Hey...there was a blind on the lake my camp is on and I noticed that they had two robo ducks going and man I gotta tell you they pulled almost every duck over their blind.Bad side is that they werent very good at hitting what they were shooting at so they were pulling birds in but then blowing some pretty easy shots! Also they were calling almost constantly which is consistant with ducks on the water when they are flapping and yacking like crazy.Then a friend of mine hunts on the harbor in wiscinsin and he said that the ducks were used so much that it was overkill and the birds avoided all the moving dekes he could see.So as usual some good and some bad,hope this helped.

We use 'em down here in my part of Tenn. with limited sucess. I figure the majority of the surviving ducks that make it this far down south have been exposed to and been shot at over them for awhile. We have one or two set up around the blind and may start the day off with one and just judge how the birds are working, if they start to flare we go to something else. I like the jack kites decoy but they are very dependant on wind along with the pulsating feeder decoys and the dabbler decoy. Season wasn't too bad around here. Killed a few ducks and some geese with a good group of hunters, just had an all around good time this year.

When we hunt and guide, we set one or two out. The ducks and geese love em. But if you hunt two weekends in a row on local birds, they wont go near it. I did have a weird day though when I had injured my arm and could only pass shoot birds, couldnt carry a decoy bag, then I decided to do a little personal researsh and just bring the robo duck with me. Shot a limit, but I was having the best day of calling of my life too. And I had the decoy positioned perfectly in a spot I normally cant get too because of deep mud. My conclusion was that location, calling (not too much), and having migrators in the area was key to the success.

I own and have used them spinning winged ducks. They are good sometines and bad sometimes. Once a duck has been shot at coming into one they stay far away from them. But as to them first of the year ducks they can be very rewarding. I use mine only on new ducks.

we have two of them one male one female and they are great, they are the difference between night and day i feel, but they do seem to draw less attention in late season, but if you want to know if they are worth buying, i feel everyone should have one so yes :-)

They are getting less and less effective.........especially late in the season.

Like someone else said, if someone has one, they will pull ducks off your spread.

I have one but would rather leave it at the house, but sometimes you have to compete with the other hunters or go home empty handed.

They get exponentially less effective each season. It's more hype now than real usefulness. The club I run is littered with them...the members don't think they can hunt without one. In fact, a couple members went to jump shoot over the rest lake levee

toward the end of this season...remember...jump shoot over a levee...and took 2 spinners with them to do it!

But I bagged way more birds this past season without them than with them. By mid-season, I had quit using them altogether. Never did like them, but when you guide for folks, it's amazing the demands they place on you when they're paying YOU because supposedly YOU know more about it than THEY do...kinda makes you scratch your head sometimes.

Anyhow...I wouldn't waste no money on one.

try throwing out a snow dec or two and a cuple cans. and run your calls plus duck call. plus a herring dec. other hunters think I am crazy but ithas drawn ducks off the spinners even in early seson teal shooting for me here in Iowa, but I will also wait for a half hour after everyone starts blasting holes in the cloud. I only shot an old bolt 20 so I do what works for me . Good luck to ya this year. :wink:

well, i have too much to say on the subject besides this,, they r good almost all the time, yet they r not the greatest thing ever, timing and location r keys to using them, although i dont beleive that ducks r intelligent enough to remmember that a decoy is a real bad place to b, they r not yotes, ive had a flock of ducks come in commited and i shoot a few then the same flock cuppes in again, just a reminder that they do work, (not as good as the manufactures would like) yet they do spook a few ducks also they do work better in low light conditions, after the sun is up i like to shut them off.. just a peronal prference good luck

I hated them when they came out.

Then i had to set and watch guys who had them take all the ducks. What a frustrating experience.

My hunting buddy started lobbying for one so i told him ok, but he had to pay for it.

After having a frustratingl, miserable experience without it I took it out w/o my buddy. A green wing teal settled right into my dekes. As it dropped it went right behind the spinner. I blew the head off the spinner. So guess what. I had to buy my buddy a new one. I kept and repaired the old one. Now I feel naked without it.

Please do not take this wrong because I do not intend to offend anyone.

I do not like to use any type of motion decoy. I think it is kind of like hunting under deer feeders (which I don't use either), cheating.

The part of the hunt that is best for me is the challenge. I have never used a spinner and probably never will. From what I've heard on other websites and as stated above is their over effective ability to decoy ducks.

Where is the challenge and the fun? Its not duck shooting, its duck hunting.

Taking my philosophy people could say I cheat because I use decoys and calls. They are probably correct, but oh well.

Just my opinion. As Radio Talk Show Host Bruce Williams says, "I am the number one source for my opinion".

I understand you point of view. It was my point of view. However, when the guy next to you is killing you with one it is tough to not compete. If you have never used one, don't assume that they guarintee success. I was shut out a bunch of times this year.

The best point for them that I have ever heard is that if they help you get the ducks in closer for a more sure kill and therefore wound less ducks it is worth it.

I use motion wing decoys for personal use and guiding. That being said, I wish they would be banned. They make waterfowl hunting easier for the people who don't know how to use regular decoys, can't call, and don't understand how to work ducks. The problem is that no matter how good you are at all of these things, a party using a motion decoy will pull all the ducks away from you if you don't have one. Until the are banned they will be a necessary evil for me.

they have been banned here in arkansas and if we can get the rest of the flyway to follow suit i know our hunting would be improved.
AG&F did a extensive study on the subject, and determined that a dissproportionate number of juvenile ducks were being slain not only making the hunting harder but also haveing a negative long term impact on the duck population. So contact your state wildlife agency and pressure them to follow suit, because Arkansas doing it alone will have no impact.
