7yr old shoots nylon 66 for the first time
« on: November 01, 2004, 02:55:17 PM »
I had my 22 out in the back yard today and my son asked if he could shoot it.  I said yes it was time.  I set a milk jug up about 25 yds away and I started out by going over the rules of safe gun handling again.  He shot my single six this summer so he knows about gun safety but he didn't seem to get much out of shooting that because we were just shooting at paper.  Anyway, I propped the gun on the back of a folding chair for support and was trying to help him line up the scope and I felt him take over so I let him find the target and told him to shoot when he had it in the cross hairs and he hit it!  I think he is hooked he was so excited!

I think I have myself a little hunting partner!    :-)

TCShooter,
Be very, very careful.
With a self-loader like the 66, your boy could     shoot till you're broke!  :)
My 7 year old grandson burns up my .22's fast enough with a single-shot!
Good for you for getting him started right, and young. :-)

Well he only fired one shot this last time but has been stoning me to go to the range.  I shoot once in a while here at the house but I would rather get him to the range.  I think it would be easier to teach him at a bench.  When did you start with your grandson?  I was wondering if I had started too soon but he was interested and I didn't want him to loose that interest.  Now I have my five year old daughter wanting to come shoot with us also.  Talk about burning through the .22's!   :)  My wife and I used to shoot when we were dating but she hasn't fired a gun in a long time...if I can get her to join us it might even end up being a family activity once in a while!

I am a lot younger than many of the guys on this board, and I have no children, buy I'd like to offer my opinion.

I think that starting children young is absolutely the best way to do it.  That is the way my father taught me.  I had safe gun handling training with my Dad's winchester 62 in the living room before i ever went to a range.  I believe that this was before I went to kindergarten.  When I satsisfied my Dad that I could be trusted to follow directions and act safely with a firearm we went to the range.

The real advantage to teaching kids when they are young (elementary school) is that you get them before they get that attack of "knowitallism" just prior to the onset of puberty. They are more interested in learning something new than looking "cool" and they actually follow instructions.

If you handload it is even better.  As the child grows so does the power of the handloads that he or she shoots.  I learned to shoot a handgun with light loads in my Dad's .44 Ruger Blackhawk.

I truly hope that you and your son get plenty of rangetime.  I am sure it is something you will both remember fondly.

Rummer nailed it on this one.......I got my first BB gun at 7, shot gun at 10, and 22 at 11.  I was allowed to shoot the BB gun anytime, but wasn't "turned loose" with the shotgun or rifle till I was 13 or so.....

Just like Rummer, I was taught safe gun handling in the den, long before handling around other people.

I think it wise to start a bit earlier now, before public education teaches the kids that guns are bad, animals have rights, and the other liberal spin that "educated people" like to propagate.

I was a bit of a late starter...BB gun @ 10 .22 @ 11 and then shotgun @ 13. Then again, this is considering no one in my family had hunted. Boy oh boy, they sure weren't an 8 point over the wall a few years later   :) . But...that's great TC. Sounds like you're gonna have alot more fun these next few years. Take care!  :D

Fishman029 sounds like me.  BB gun at 10 (gift from Uncle) and I bought my first shotgun at age 13 and a .22 at age 15.  My family didn't own any guns or hunt either but my uncle did.  He took me shooting a few times.  He also had a beagle and took me rabbit hunting one time with him and I was hooked on the thrill of the chase and just being in the outdoors.  I am not much into rabbits now days but wonder if I would have gotten into hunting and shooting without my uncle sparking that interest!

Funny thing is that my father started even later...he didn't start enjoying guns till just recently.

Thats funny. Guess I was an early starter. Got my first bb gun@ 4. .22 @ 7. 4-10 @ 10. I shot so much with my .22 at about 13 that my dad quit shootin with me cause i would out shoot him and them rub it in. So I finnaly got him to give in and now we shoot together all the time. I might be a good shot but I give all the thanks to my dad for teaching me.
