Having Problems with a New Carbine Barrel
« on: November 02, 2004, 11:48:24 AM »
Just got my 30-30AI from FRO and mounted scope and started playing with it when noticed the hammer doesn't fall all the way down.  It sounds very similar to previous thread "Question for Contender Pros" but this is a Brand New bbl.  The frame is a "generation 2" if you will (has the safety in hammer as a "push bar" type).  I tried it again with the pistol bbl and it works fine.  both bbls have the split lug, (the New FRO bbl has a silver lug, while older 357 max bbl has a black one).  The new bbl is clean having never been fired.  Other than that, I can't think of anything that could be keeping it from locking up properly.  It seems the "crossbar safety" stays in the way of the hammer. Any help will be GReatly appreciated.  Trying to get it on line before TX deer hunt during Thanksgiving.  Thanks.  Bill

Are you shooting factory 30-30 ammo or reloads? If reloads, the bullet may be seated out to far engaging the lands before the action locks up. Also, if you are reloading and using brass that has been fireformed to the AI, the shoulder may need to be "bumped" back.

I haven't shot a round through it yet.  The problem seems to occur even without a round in the chamber.  It just doesn't seem to "close enough" I guess to let the hammer fall all the way to the firing pin without a round in it.  Not a good way to start a project.  THanks and sure could use some advice.  Bill

Probrably the locking lugs.  Closely the barrel into the action very smartly,
cock the hammer, hold it back with the thumb and pull the trigger while watching inside between the hammer and frame. if the small sliding block does not drop down, the barrel lugs are not going into the frame far enough.  This can be cured by delicatley stoning off the top of the lug so it will enter the frame far enough. or returning it to TC for refitting.  This is a common problem and easily solved.

Good Luck,

Wally

That looks like the problem.  I can't decide if I should go though the whole mailing back process or trying to fix it myself.  If I try it myself, I'm pretty sure I can't return it.  How would I fix this myself?  It sounds like you described the problem exactly and have dealt with it before.  Many Thanks for the help, as this is the first problem I've ever had with a TC and was really looking forward to hunting with this rig real soon.  Bill

Call Thompson, I had lug problems with an old barrel fitting a new frame. They sent me 3 sets of lugs to fit &/or play with. :)   The rep explaned how to stone the lugs for a proper fit.  He also had me put a different barrel on the frame to make sure the problem was the barrel & not the frame. Also said if I still couldn't get it right or screwed up all three sets to send the gun in.
There aren't many companies that stand behind their product like Thompson.
