What rifle for project???

I am looking for a mauser or other rifle action that will be good for a project.  I enjoy tinkering and would like to do some gunsmithing.

Would like to find an action, strip it of the barrel, get an after-market barrel, stock, trigger, etc.  Calibers I have in mind are 17Ackley Hornet, or another 17 cal, or 6.5-284, 6.5-06, or ???  Rechambering is no problem.  If all goes well, I will get a shilen barrel after the tinkering.

As far as stocks, I would like a near drop-in where I could do some minor work and glass bed it.

Oh yeah...just like everyone else, I want the action at a reasonable price.

Well the only cheap project gun right now is a M1938 Turkish 8MM Mauser at J&G Sales for $64.50.  Unless you find a '98k with a shotout barrel like i did for $20 but thats very rare.  There are 98k's with the markings ground off but they are priced higher.                            BigBill

The Turk mauser would probably be your best bet.  I'm going to order one when I get my next paycheck that's going to be an ongoing project.  I'm going to do what I can to it myself and for the rest of the work I'm going to send it off to ER Shaw.  I'm planning on having a 24" .25-06 barrel added (with helical fluting) and having the whole thing reblued.  After that I'll be adding a JRS Classic Nutmeg Laminate stock from Boyd Boys.  If all turns out as planned it'll be one heck of a sweet looking/shooting rifle when I get done with it  :grin:.  The only thing I'm torn about is whether to go ahead and install a vertical swing scope safety or to go for some of the aftermarket Win Mod70 style shroud and safety combos.  Decisions, descisions :).

My next project is going to be the attempt at making
an SKS into a Bullpup Configuration rifle. I have some technical
problems to work out with the trigger but I think it is feasible.

Why would I want to you ask? I have no idea,
I just think it would be interesting.

I am also working on something even crazier!
A carbine based on a CZ52 pistol. This is still
just on paper though.

Hay S. Sumner:  when you get your idea for a carbine built on a CZ52 let me know, willya?  I've been looking for a way to get or make a small, lightweight carbine in the 7.62x25mm caliber.  I don't want to have to go the route of a full blown Contender, something like a Destroyer Carbine in 7.62x25mm caliber would be a hoot.  Truely, if I ever find another Destroyer Carbine that's exact-a-lo-mento what I am gonna do.  Or maybe a used CZ rifle in 7.62x39 rebarrelled to the pistol caliber.  Or for that matter, maybe a handful of 7.62x25mm inserts for a 30-06?  Who knows, but your idea sounds interesting..  Mikey.
