Hard to Break Open Handi
« on: November 02, 2004, 02:01:17 PM »
Well here it is...

My Handi 45 colt has always been hard to Break Open...It will not just fall open like my .223 Handi will.  I have tried the 45 barrel on both of my receivers and the 45 receiver is just plain tight with the 45 Barrel...(as the .223 barrel does not lock onto the 45 Frame, it is not a good test to try it that way, but it still is tight, just not as tight as the 45 on its frame).

When I have the 45 barrel and frame together, I almost have to use two hands to open them....I can at some times just flick the wrist and it will open, but more times than often, I have to pull down on the fore arm...

In contrast, my .223 Handi opens with just a full press of the release...smooth and easy....

Anyone have a tight action like this?  Is there anyway of smoothing this out....

FYI the 45 Colt Frame has a MC Synth Stock...and Yes with the fore arm in place it is even harder to open than without it...The Fore Arm is from my .223 barrel, as I have the sourvivor Stock on the 223...But even witht he wood 20g Fore Arm it is tight...So I am not 100% sure it is all Fore Arm that is the problem...

Any Ideas...

Thanks a Ton,

HutchHandiMan.
Take off the forearm and and try open the gun as far as you would when you load it. This will tell you if the forearm was binding.

Put some red lipstick on the areas that look as if they bind. If the lipstick rubs off hone that spot with a stone or a wood block with #400 wet and dry sand paper. Remove only the high spots maybe just tooling marks.

We are talking only less than .001" since you can open the gun. If it is the hinge cap do the same thing but watch it there, because it is plastic.
You could also slightly relieve the foream screw.

Do not touch the hinge pin and hinge pin seat.

HHM: Does the latch mechanism [lever] operate easily and smoothly? Sometimes it's necessary to lighly stone and smooth engagement surfaces. Good Luck:  Duce:

When my .280 was new it was difficult to open. You had to push on the release button pretty hard. After a while it finally broke-in and it is fine now.

I have had several that were tight. Let it wear in by itself. After a couple hundred rounds, opening and closing, and it will be fine.
