Any suggestions for my first muzzleloader?
« on: November 03, 2004, 11:01:00 AM »
I'm looking at buying my first muzzleloader. Here in Michigan the season is only 1 week long, so I am not interested in spending alot of money right now on the high end in-line ML.
I would like any opinions on the lower price level ML's, like the CVA's, NEF's, etc. I'd like to keep the price under $200 for now. Thanks!

Natchez has the CVA Eclipse .45 on sale. I have a cheapie CVA Staghorn, shoots as good as my TC Black Diamonds with Powerbelt bullets. The big difference that I have noticed about the cheap inlines, is the sights are usually plastic, if any have metallic sights, that would be a plus, or you'll want to swap em out and that adds to the cost.

Basspro has a bunch of their black powder guns on sale.

Cabelas has a couple on sale, also. They have a handy comparo page, too!

Midway has the CVA Staghorn in .45 on sale for $69.99
Me and the Mrs. each got one. As Quickdtoo says, the sights are cheap plastic, but what do you want for about $80.00 to your door. Sights can be replaced.
We haven't shot ours a lot, but they seem to do an adequate job with conicals so far.

I'd go with the Huntsman combo (super accurate, and a breeze to clean)
.50 muzzy barrel, and .243!!!! 2 distinct rifles, for less than the price of most muzzleloaders. I also agree with the Staghorn analysis.
69 bucks, and It shoots as well as anything I've tested!

nef sidekick

The sidekick is the way to go here no doubt.  It is abreak action with superior primer placement, well manufactured barrel and 1 1/2" accuracy at 100 yrds.  The sidekick sells for around $150 in blued/wood and stainless synth stock runs $203-$240.  The barrel is made in the usa and has deep grooving  and is 26" - it can actually safely handle 150 magnum loads unlike the others that claim to.  The other ones selling under $300 are mostly made with barrels from spain - which are know to be innacurate and incapable of consisetently handleing 150 grain loads.  The sights are good quality williams fiber optics.  Trigger pull is 3 1/2 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Go to the nef huntsman forum section of this sight to learn more.  or go to the New England Firearms web site.

The NEF.  I am going to get one for my son for his birthday rather than buy a slug barrel for his shotgun.
