Brownell's Gun Kote???
« on: November 04, 2004, 04:09:15 AM »
Afetr speaking with Brownell's I am thinking of trying some Gun Kote.  One thing they recommend is having it bead blasted for a better "stick"  Since I do not have a bead blaster, would roughing the metal with sandpaper work?

Sounds terrible to take sandpaper to a gun but that was my thought, not theirs.

I would find someone local to bead blast it for you.  I would take the firearm to them in parts just so they don't freak out if they normally don't work on firearms.
I'm not a gunsmith or gun refinisher but the thought of taking sandpaper to a gun makes me cringe.

Every time a gun is blued there is sandpaper(or equivilent) applied to the steel.  Hand polishing the metal with various grits of abrasive paper will produce the rough surface needed for the GunKote to stick.  Just stop at about 220 grit..  Make the surface finish nice and even and the paint will stick just fine..  Be sure to follow directions carefully.  The beadblasting suggestion is just a really fast way to roughen the steel..sandpaper will accomplish the same thing..
