First post, and a liberal too!
« on: November 04, 2004, 07:43:43 AM »
Hi folks,

First, let me tell you how much I've enjoyed this forum for the last couple of months.  I've been doing a lot of research lately on hunting rifles and searches on these forums have always yielded knowledgeable, insightful advice from a very supportive community.  After enjoying some antelope meat that a friend shared with me, and as I look forward to the possibility of moving west next spring, I've been excitedly reading all of your posts regarding NEF/H&R rifles, mods, calibers and loads.  Fantastic stuff.  Handi in a .270 is the current frontrunner I think.

I grew up in rural Massachusetts in a great blue collar town, Lee.  I got my Firearms ID card on my 15th birthday, and my Remington 870 Express the next day.  Some of the happiest memories of my childhood involved frigid mornings, corn fields, goose decoys, good hunting buddies and a quirky black lab.  The deer were nowhere nearly as cooperative as the geese, though, and the biggest bird I saw turkey hunting was the chickadee that landed on my gun barrel.

I have a criticism, hopefully constructive, to offer, though.

One thing I've noticed here is the casual disdain heaped on opposing political views in these forums.  Having a substantially different opinion of the meaning of the 2nd Amendment than others in the Democratic party, I can pretty much count on having an issue of contention with just about anyone I talk politics with.  However, I've also found that no matter what differences I may have with someone, I'm almost always able to discuss it civilly without belittling their convictions.

How we talk about each other matters, even with people who share our beliefs.  Our history is full of examples of partnership and respect in spite of disagreement, starting with Adams and Jefferson, and extending today to Warner and Levin.  When we start looking at each other as caricatures, it reduces our capacity to find constructive compromise and common ground, without which we wouldn't have such an enduring Constitution to begin with.

I spent two months in Kansas this summer with my folks during a family illness.  They moved there several years ago, and we have all immensely enjoyed the state and its people.  Almost to a person, the community has been as welcoming, hospitable and gracious as can be.  We've also had a great time shooting clay pidgeons and criminal milk jugs in the back pasture with Dad's .308.  And don't even get me started on the money we've spent on 4th of July fireworks!  Talk about shock and awe!  Knowing so many good people there, most of whom are Republican, I'm sure, makes it impossible for me to belittle their beliefs.  I may disagree with them, sometimes vehemently, and I may even try to change their minds about a particular issue, but I will not insult my parents' friends and neighbors by mocking their convictions.

I live in New York City now, due to work.  On 9/11 I literally felt the shockwave from the first impact and watched the World Trade Center fall from my living room window.  I smelled its acrid stench for the next weeks, as I, like my neighbors watched F-16's circle overhead and winced at the sound of every jet engine.  But the people of New York are as resilient as any in the world, and we continue our pursuit of enterprise and enjoyment of all of the city's cultural offerings, in spite of the bullseye that remains tattooed on it.  On tuesday, I stood in line for 30 minutes along with several hundred people, some of whom were voting for the first time as American citizens, to pull every last democratic lever in the booth.  I  have reasons for voting this way, informed by a moral Christian upbringing.

My point is (finally) that as I continue to enjoy this forum and its wonderful discussions, I would hope you do yourselves the service of respecting the decency, if not the different political beliefs, of the people you've not had the pleasure of meeting.  I may also weigh in from time to time on the pot bellied stove forum in threads that seek truth, not derision.

Cheers,
Bo

Sorry but how in the world can you claim to be a "moral Christian" and still vote for the immoral dumocraps like Kerry and many others of the party? The party has become the strong hold of all that is immoral and depraved.

I can see why those who are too sorry to work and wish to be "on the dole" are voting that way. I can see why the immoral and gays and lesbians vote that way. I can see why communist vote that way. I can see how those who's interests lie in the down fall of the US would vote that way. I can see how those who do not believe in the US Constitution would vote that way.

But I cannot see how any truly moral Christian or for that matter anyone with a belief in morals and God can vote that way. I cannot see how anyone who loves our Country and our Constitution can vote that way. I don't see how anyone who loves freedom and liberty can vote that way.

Sorry but it is just not logical to say you care for these things and then vote for the party that is AGAINST all of them. Anyone who believes the lies the dumocraps tell can't be playing with a full deck. When time after time you see them make promises that are 180 degrees from what they've done in the past and you know they'll do once in office and then still vote them in how can you call that sane? How can you vote for a party or candidate you know to be the enemy of the US Constitution? How can you support a party who's leaders freely admit they want a ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT? An idea who's roots dictate the end of the US as a Soverign nation and to make it subserviant to the UN? How can you vote for a party who's very platform calls for abandonment of the US Constitution and does all within their power to dismantle it?

I cannot accept that any of these things are sane or rational. I won't call it stupid but for sure it is ignorant. Ignorance being a lack of knowledge or understanding of an issue. I will refer to such people as dumocraps like it or not. Derrogatory? Yes, most assuredly. I also refuse to capitalize the name I give the party loyal as I do not feel any party, any group of individuals who's lack of morals and penchant for ruining my country deserve it.

I am firmly of the opinion that the very best thing that could happen to this nation today is for the dumocrap party to end. To cease to exist. To be replaced by one or perhaps more likely two parties. One to have those bleeding heart liberals in it. Those who wish to abandon the Constitution. Those who wish to see 10% of the people earning money and the other 90% living off what is taken from them. Those who wish to live immoral and indecent lives. Those who hate all America stands for. That should take 75% of the folks now in the party. The other should be those folks who still have moral values and still want the US Constitution to stand but who have honest differences of opinions with how the Republican party is running things.

If such a split could be made I'm betting that the Republican party would soon likewise split and those like thinkers from both would soon become the strongest of the new four party system that would replace the current two party system.

At GBO we do not make personal attacks. We do not name call. (well other than for the dumocraps)   We do not use foul language. We do not offer a platform for liberal bias or anti American, anti gun, anti hunting, anti trapping, anti fishing or animal rights folks to preach from. We'll be nice nearly all the time and wish we were the rest of the time.

But danged if I'll stand by and let folks who want to ruin my country and take away the US Constitution do so unchallenged here. Not everyone likes the way I run this site. But many many many do. Those who do are always welcome. Those who don't are always welcome to leave. I'll even suggest to them where to go to find folks of like mind.

badbo,
Welcome to the forum. Glad you have enjoyed the forum.  Look forward to seeing you here in the future.

I pretty much agree with Graybeard regarding the current Democtratic party. Unfortunately, it is not the same party that it was 25 years or so ago.

Many registered Democrats crossed party lines to vote for Bush. No wonder, their party has been hijacked by those with extreme viewpoints, many opposite of what our founding fathers had intended for this great nation.

Below is an ad that  was run in the Washington Post that is worth reading.

You're a Republican???  ( I once was a Democrat)

In today's America, ask a growing number of high school and college
students; their teachers and professors; the self-anointed media elite
and/or hard working men and women of all ethnicities, the question,
"What is a Republican?", and you'll be told a rich, greedy,
egotistical individual, motivated only by money and the desire to
accumulate more and more of it, at the expense of the environment and
the working poor and all whom they exploit.

I am a Republican and I am none of those things and I don't know any
 Republicans who are.

WHAT I AM, first and foremost, is a loving husband of some 52 plus
years, the father of four and an American who's proud of his country
and his country's heritage.

WHAT I AM is the grandson of immigrants who risked everything,
including their lives and those of their children, to escape tyranny
in search of freedom.

WHAT I AM is a man who grew up during the Depression and witnessed,
first hand, the effects of the Stock Market crash and the soup lines
that followed. I watched as both my parents and grandparents, who had
very little themselves, share what food they had with a half dozen
other families, who had even less.

WHAT I AM is someone who worked his way through college by holding
down three and four jobs at a time and then used that education to
build a better life.

WHAT I AM is a husband who, at age 24, started his own business for
the privilege of working 60, 70 and 80 hours a week, risking
everything I had, including my health, in search of a better life for
myself and my loved ones.

WHAT I AM is a businessman whose blood, sweat and tears and plenty of
them made it possible for me to provide a secure living, not only for
my family and myself, but also for literally hundreds of my employees
throughout the years. Employees, who in turn, were able to buy their
own homes, raise their own families and give back to their communities and their country.

WHAT I AM is a man who believes in God; a God who has blessed this
country and all for which it stands.

WHAT I AM is someone who knows, if you doubt miracles exist in today's
world, you need only to look into the face of those who received them
and the eyes of those who give them.

WHAT I AM is an American who's proud that his President embraces a
belief in God; proud of a President who understands, as politically
incorrect as it may be, there is evil in this world and for the
security and safety of all freedom loving people everywhere, it must
be confronted and it must be defeated.

WHAT I AM is an American who takes comfort in the knowledge that our
President refuses to allow decisions concerning the very safety and
security of this nation, to be governed by the political whims of
foreign governments.

WHAT I AM is tired of hearing from leading Democrats who see only
negativity in America; racism in her people; class warfare in her
society and political incorrectness in her character.

WHAT I AM is a former Democrat who now understands that it is the
soldier and not the reporter that guarantees us our freedoms of press,
speech and dissent.

WHAT I AM is a man who believes in the sanctity of life. A man who is
repulsed by the pandering of the political left for votes, at the
expense of the unborn.

WHAT I AM is a husband and father who believes in the sanctity of
marriage and the preservation of the family unit.

WHAT I AM is a movie go-er who is repulsed by those insecure, socially
inept, elementary thinking, ego-inflated entertainers who have
appointed themselves experts in the fields of national security and
geo-politics and then use their forum to attack this nation, its
leaders and its actions, much to the delight and encouragement of our enemies.

WHAT I AM is an American who understands the difference between
censorship and choice. Evidently, these individuals do not, because
when these same celebrities receive public ridicule for their
offensive actions, the first thing they yell is Censorship!. What they
seem incapable of understanding is the right of free speech and
dissent is shared equally by those offended as well as those who
offend. I support and will continue to support those films and
performers whom I choose to and refuse to support those I don't.
It is my right as an American and a right I will continue to
enthusiastically exercise.

WHAT I AM is a voter, tired of politicians, who, every time their
voting records are subjected to public scrutiny, try to divert
attention from their political and legislative failures by accusing
their opponents of attack ads and negative campaigning and the news
media who allow them to get away with it.

WHAT I AM is a Catholic who loves his God and his Faith and who's been
taught to respect all religions whose teachings are based in love,
peace and charity. As such, I am embarrassed and ashamed of those
individuals, in both private and public life, whose decisions and
actions are devoid of any sense of character or morals; individuals
who are only driven by what's best for them rather than what's right
and often times at the expense of many, including our national
security.

WHAT I AM is a realist who understands that the terrorist attack that
murdered hundreds of innocent Russian children could have occurred
here, in our heartland. That's why I sincerely believe America needs
now, more than ever, a President who sees with a clear and focused
vision and who speaks with a voice when heard by both friend and foe
alike, is understood, respected and believed.

WHAT I AM is eternally grateful to Ronald Reagan for having the
bravery to speak out against Communism and the courage of his
convictions in leading the fight to defeat it; and George W. Bush for
the vision, courage, conviction and leadership he has shown in
America's war on terrorism amidst both the constant and vicious,
personal and political attacks both he and his family are made to
endure.

WHAT I AM is a human being, full of numerous faults and failures, but
a man nonetheless, who, though not always successful, has continually
strived to do what's right instead of what's easy. A man who is
challenging the religious leaders of all faiths, to not only preach to
their congregations the fundamentals of what's right and what's wrong,
but to also then hold them accountable for their actions in both the
public and private sectors.

WHAT I AM is disgusted with the Courts who, on one hand, call the
murder of a pregnant woman a double homicide but then refer to the
abortion of her baby as pro-choice.

WHAT I AM is someone deeply troubled by a political party which
embraces a candidate whose primary leadership qualities center around
his protesting of the Vietnam war and his labeling the honorable men
and women who fought in it, (50,000 of whom gave their lives in that
action), as rapists, and war criminals. That same political party then
stepped forward this year to block the appearance of a true Vietnam
war hero, retired Admiral and former United States Senator, Jeremiah
Denton, (a man who spent seven years and seven torturous months in a
North Vietnam prison), from speaking before an open session of the
California legislature as part of that state's 4th of July
celebration. The reason Democrats gave for refusing to allow this
American hero to speak before their state legislature was because of
the conservative nature of his views. As an American, that troubles me
deeply, as well it should you.

WHAT I AM is a man who feels the need to spend $104,655.60 (tax paid)
of his own money, to purchase this advertisement, in order to set the
story straight. Some may say this money would have been better spent
feeding the world's poor. At the risk of sounding self-serving, as an
American and as a Republican, for the last six decades of my life, I
have done exactly that and more. Following the examples of my parents
and grandparents, I have used my earnings to feed the poor, shelter
the homeless, provide housing for the elderly and medical care for the
sick and continue to do so and I'm not alone in that work.

WHAT I AM is someone who is paying for this announcement, at my sole
expense, in hopes of opening the eyes of those led blindly by
ill-informed elements of our great nation, who, through either
ignorance, or malicious intent, repeatedly attack and belittle those
of us who belong to a political party that holds true to the belief,
the rights of the governed, exceed the power of the government. For
those interested, I am speaking only as a tax-paying individual who is
in no way associated with The Republican National Committee, nor with
any of its directors, or delegates.

WHAT I AM is a man who understands, the American way of life is a
message of self-empowerment for all.

WHAT I AM is an American who is grateful that our nation gives each of
us the opportunity of self-determination and the right to benefit from
the fruits of self achievement.

WHAT I AM is an American who wants to preserve that way of life for
all who seek it.

WHAT I AM is blessed to be an American and proud to be Republican.

Bo,Libs have become a Cancerous party within the Democratic party. You lost some more real Democrats last year and more this year ie Simon,Monyhan,Breax,Miller.Libermann is a true Democrat.I believe in the two party system,I am a Republican that wants a strong Democratic Party, not a party of Libera/communist and that is what you have and this election proves it.If you try to dump the Two Sacker Hillary on us you will loose again.Get rid of the Hollywood Commies[I was born in Hollywood in 33] and the NY,Or,WA ,MA liberals that are leading you astray. And welcome.

I think Bo's post is to bait us and is a troll. First of all How can you have a moral christian upbringing and support a party that supports the death of unborn live and Euthinasia of older people and sick folks? Two. How can you support a party who wants to take away your guns and wants to limit public land for hunting? Three. How can you support a party that after the smoke had not even cleared from the attacks on 911 went back to non support of Bush for the war on terror and then went full attack mode on acount of Iraq even though Bush made the comment we would fight the terrorist where ever we found them and if you harbored a terrorist you were as guilty as being one? Four. The Democrats are not the party toay that they used to be. Today they are darn near communistic in their beliefs. There are hardly no more moderate Democrats any more and very few if any right leaning Democrats they all are over the center to the left or extremely left in their thinking and values. I know a lot of good folks are Democrats and vote that way because they were brought up that way and do not know any different, but to vote for a person like Kerry, Or Klinton, Or Gore or any of the other radical Lefties of the party sure as hell does not mean you have studied all the issues. My departed Mother voted Democrat and I voted the same until I learned what the party stood for in these later years. I switched over to Republican and have had the joy of cancelling out my mothers vote every time I voted. My brother is a Retired LEO and is firmly a Republican also. Even my mother though she claimed she was a Democrat in these later years would not vote for a Democtrat that has so little respect for life as the Democrats do now. The Democrats better change their values as this election showed them the heartland of America believes in God, Guns, and Family Values. Something most of the liberals do not or ignore. So Bo I think your post is done by a troll and yea I fell for it and fed you but I felt the need to comment as well as GB and w30wcf did.

w30wcf,

Thanks for you welcome.  If differing opinions are welcomed here, I look forward to some good discussions.

It's interesting.  Two of my five best friends vote with the GOP and would agree with the article you posted 100%.  One's killed just about every species of mammal over 50 pounds in North America, too, I'd wager, but they'd both die for me as I would for them in spite of our disagreements.  I fundamentally agree with a lot of the underlying values the article represents, while I disagree with the line of reasoning that leads to some of his conclusions.

Personally, I think the Democratic party is broken too, which is one of the reasons I'm introducing myself here.  How can a party that is afraid of its own name keep itself from sounding duplicitous to avoid the dreaded L word?    Personally, I'm perfectly fine with being a liberal.  It seems that "dumocrat"  :) candidates would sound sincere in places other than their concession speeches if they acknowledged that when the liberal label fits the policies they believe in, they might as well wear it with pride.

I'm not interested in disrupting your community, which is why I didn't jump in on a thread with a very different opinion before introducing myself.  It would be easy enough for me to let fly with a litany of assertions, accusations and  simplifications, but that wouldn't change any minds.  If those with confidence enough in their convictions to conduct a civil dialog with someone who disagrees are interested in an occasional debate, I'd love to hear you out.  If not, I'll stick to gun talk.

Cheers,
Bo

Welcome badbo,
Don't worry because you are not alone.  I find this forum very good but like many sites like this is dominated my the right.  As you can see from the post they seem to know what god thinks and anyone that disagrees is in fact disagreeing with god.   The christians I know (also left) would never use words like "Demacraps."  I think that kind of talk speaks volumes about the people saying it.

badbo,

Another note.  From what I read you were simply asking to be respectful and understand a difference of opinion from others.  The post were more like a slap in the face.

Sorry GB.

Sorry I disagree with you but you are making my point.  My selection in what words I capitalize isn't reading into my soul.  I believe the apathy and lack of understanding comes form you and the others posting.

Please read what the man said.  He simply asked for respect for a different point of view.  You Mr. GB even said that we shouldn't do the things in this forum you are now doing.  I truly understand your passions because I have them of my own.  I can have my passion and still respect you and your lack of understanding my view.  I wonder Mr. GB if you can?

I do have one more statement about the folks pointing out bad people in the Democratic party.  Timothy McVeigh was a republican.  I know three men when I was younger that were active KKK members and three of the biggest republicans I knew.  How many want to make a wager that  %90 of every skin head voted for Bush?

I make these points to show your party isn't perfect either but I never said anything about it.  Remember understanding and respect goes both ways.

GB I think we should let them stay. How else can we increase our numbers if we don't have a few libs around to convert. I believe our strong positions on morality and faith in God will keep them from being a bad influence on us. My Momma always told me if you sleep with the pigs don't be surprised if you start to smell like them. I think that works both ways. I think if these fellows hang around here long enough, the good folks here will rub off on them.  Think of it as a mission to cast out demons. If they abide by the rules lets welcome them.

brdavis said that most of us on this forum who are Christians..." seem to know what God thinks"..

That is not difficult br, God wrote a book that tells us EXACTLY what he thinks on many subjects: it's called The Bible...try it some time!

Graybeard and w30wcf could not have been more correct...

Badbo; without using sound bites and "spin slogans"...please tell us the  ten best ideas Liberals have come up with in the last thirty years, and let's discuss them rationally.

Frankly; I don't believe they have come up with any...

I saw a Doctor speaking on the subject of Liberal vs Conservative today.
He said it was a matter of right brain vs left brain struggle...

Conservatives are LOGICAL while Liberals are EMOTIONAL..

Obviously, very few are completely one or the other...most folks are a blend, with one side being dominant...

  Left- logical

  Right- emotional

Probably the reason we hear so much name calling from the left is because of the emotional factor...

So why do we jokingly use such terms as Demon-crat ?

Recently, a Liberal made a statement, speaking of Pres. Bush..." Now we have to deal with two fundamentalists..Osama Bin Ladin , and the one in the White House!"

Seems to me that anyone that would make that comparison concerning an obviously Godly man like the President, perhaps does harbor a Demon.

Seems to me that any political party that endorses waiting until the child is being born, then puncturing his/her skull and sucking their little brain into a bell-jar...may well be guided by a Demon....

What say you? ..How do you defend the "brain sucking" of little boys and girls on their birthday?
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Ironglow,

Interesting thought on liberal/emotional vs. conservative/logical.  If you really want good evidence that refutes the idea, go look at slashdot, a website for computer geeks.  The ones that design your computers and software.  You can't get much more logical than that.  Highly educated folks, too, and well paid.  Now look at their political discussions and polls.

What you'll find is a ton of liberals, mixed with a healthy number of conservatives and libertarians.  Why are so many of them liberal?  I think because their natural inclination is to question the status quo at work, in technology, and in politics.  Also, many of us were teased as kids as being weird or nerds.  We're proud to be nerds now, but it hurt bad in 6th grade, so we're tolerant of differences between people and anyone willing to make an honest argument in defense of their conviction.

You can't make progress or adapt to change without reevaluating accepted ideas.  The good ones stand up on their own merit.  The bad ones go into the dustbin of history, like slavery, monarchy and communism.  And windows 95.

Bed time folks.  Hope I haven't turned too many faces red.

Cheers,
Bo

I hate to bust your bubble but I have never seen one of these folks call them geeks, Genius'es, Dang smart or what ever have enough common sense to get out of the rain. Yea while I appreciate the comforts of life they give us and the toys their own little nitch is all they know. I sure as heck would not trust then on any rational thinking on politics. They are no better than the goons in hollywood just a bit smarter in their own way. Remember it is a fine line between genious and Insanity and many of these types have proved that over the years. Smart in their own area but in others crazier than a out house rat.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Dang badbo, I know why we think alike!  I'm a geek too!  17 years as a IT Systems Engineer.  High Tech Redneck my friends call me.

Another note here...
It never amazes me how someone can claim that a geek can't get out of the rain.  Fact is we geeks are well educated and have the ability to see through the crap and make a decision based on logical thinking.  We geeks think abstract because we are thought that way and think that way.  That makes us thinkers and not emotional knee jerk liberals.   Bill Gates is the richest man in the world because of this and you know he a liberal too!

Also one other thing...Always be nice to a geek because more than likely he will be your boss someday.

Good day :D

[quote="brdavis" As you can see from the post they seem to know what god thinks and anyone that disagrees is in fact disagreeing with god.[/quote]

As a matter of fact sir, I DO know what my living God thinks. I know what He thinks about murdering innocent babies in the name of convenience and calling it a choice. I know what He thinks about the abomination of homosexuality that some call an alternative life style. And I know what He thinks about bearing false witness against your neighbor. You know, kinda like the entire campaign the left waged trying to get your looser candidates elected. I have never seen such an outpouring of pure hate in my life. Nothing but lies. But we didn't buy it and we sent your loosers packing. Yes sir I do know what God thinks because He wrote it down in a book and gave it to me. I have one in my shirt pocket now as well as one on my desk along with my Strongs, and I have several at my home. This is my book of instruction for life. I take it literally, and I wont let my convictions or values be compromised by a bunch of leftist lying radicals.
So you see. Most of us here are pretty much on the same side. The "right" side. We wont see our country or our God disrespected without rising up against it.
So if that makes any of you uncomfortable......Well.....Bye !
The Lord didnt create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close. :D

Even with all the money in the world  you still can't buy your way into heaven. (the reference to Bill Gates, who, by the way is no better than me)

I'm really curious--why do you want to be here?? On a forum that is ~99.9% hard working, God fearing conservatives.  Do you hunt, fish, camp, enjoy any outdoor activities, own a firearm??? Do you support the 2ond amendment? I don't expect an answer, as that is none of my business, something to think about.

I might not have any "book learning" but I, too, am very well educated.  I have worked at service jobs, and have found that many geeks (as you seem to prefer to be called) are clueless to everyday life.  I cleaned house for a doctor and wife, he was brilliant as a doctor, but had no idea how to turn on the dishwasher. That brings to mind the Far Side cartoon where the frustrated person at the 'School for the Gifted' was trying to push the door open, when the sign read pull.

The computers of ours you work on, are to me, a luxury. I would welcome the return of the old neighborhood bank, local schools, etc., a much simpler life. Technology is supposed to make life easier, I see it in a lot of ways as much more complicated.  I could survive quite well if the electricity went out, could you??

I always welcome a spirited debate also, my dad and I go at it regularly, and still love each other! We agree to disagree! He has taught me to be open-minded! I have many thoughts running through my mind, but time to stop!

Deb   :-)

Hey Deb,

See my original post.  I grew up hunting, and do so whenever I visit my folks.  I found this forum as I was doing research on NEF rifles.  I grew up in a rural town and miss it terribly.  I spoke up because I'm tired of hate being employed in politics by either party.  It's not American or Christian, and in my little way I want to take the dialog away from the guys on Fox News and Crossfire and share some discussions with people of differing views directly.

Cheers,
Bo
