What's the story on Armour Alloy barrels?
« on: November 04, 2004, 04:38:56 PM »
Are there any problems with AA barrels?  Do they fit standard frames? Is there an AA frame as well?  The barrels I see look real sharp, like stainless, but the popularity of them seems to be a little lower and I'm wondering why that is.   Actually the AA finish appears very similiar to SSKs silver finish.

The AA finish is a nickle plating of sorts.   They need to be modified to fit "regular" frames but this is easily done and T/C did mine for $25.  Same for the AA frames to use "regular" barrels.  I suspect for the reason lack of popularity is they were not as interchangable as regular ones and the availablity of SS did them in.  Mine is a .35 Remington and I have grown to love it.  Finding the right grips for my hand and an accurate load did it for me.

How do you know if you have an AA frame or a stainless frame?  Do the serial numbers distinguish them?

AA barrels are stamped AA, and the frames' serial No. starts with an 'A'

Don't rule out those Armour Alloy barrels. A wooden dowel and some emory cloth will have it fitting your blue or stainless frame in no time. The hard satin chrome finish has a thickness that needs to be removed from the hinge pin hole so the blue and stainless hinge pins will fit. This is to be done carefully with several attempts of trying the pin while smoothing the hole. Remove too much material and you ruined the barrel.
