Well, as soon as the weather breaks (or at least get about 32 for a day) I will be trying out some Hammerhead SPW slugs that I moly coated. I will be chronographing them against same slug load without moly. Should be interesting to see if any increase in velocity.  I also will be trying some mica coated slugs for comparison against moly. Heck, if I get 25-50 fps increase, I'll take it. Kind of interesting trying to apply bottleneck cartridge methods to slug reloading. Some of it works and some just hits the backstop somewhere. Curious if anyone has tried anything like this before and if so what were the results.

Hey Muddy,
Someone once told me some time ago about injecting moly grease into Commercial slugs to cut down on barrel leading.  His one note of warning concerned the possiblity the grease could get by the wad and kill the powder.  I never tried it.  Might work at the range where the shot is fired off quickly.

Thanks for heads up. The slugs I'm reloading are full sabot that stays with slug to target. The lead is shaped like a rivet giving the slug nose heavy flight. This is actually good for down range ballistics for a slug. The sabot engraves the slug barrel rifling and not the lead so there is no leading problem. The lead comes out to the edge of the sabot to give it some efficiency. I am hoping the moly will decrease barrel friction. Same moly powder I use for my .243. Sticks real good to the plastic sabot. Also have few loaded up coated with mica to see ithat helps as well. These are real interesting slugs and a blast to shoot. I have no trouble breaking clay birds at 100 yards and scare the hell out of them at 200yds and breaking one with some frequency. Working up some heavy loads right now but weather is a problem. Just put a Sims recoil pad on stock which was sorely needed. (no pun intended!) Tremendous terminal performance on deer based upon my son's 5 pt this year. Awesome impact and exit. I hugged my 300 sav. this last weekend. I love shooting that old gun. Shoots great with the old williams peep. What cal. you got? Am always looking for a good load to try.

I also am in the process of working up some slug loads.  Last weekend I loaded some 1 oz. lee fosters, 1 1/4oz. lyman fosters wraped with teflon tape and some .635  1 oz. round balls in a AA shotcup. Soon as I get out to the shop to do some shooting I'll post results. Cold here also. 3 ft. of snow on the ground makes it tough setting targets.

Nice to hear from someone back home. I was transferred out to Indiana about 10 years ago. Schoharie Co. was my old stomping ground for deer, grouse, turkey and trout fishing when I lived back in NY. Killed a lot of deer around Livingstonville, Scott Patent Hill, Teeter Hollow, Preston Hollow, Potter Hollow (Knowles Road area) over the years. Miss the hill country out here. Flat as pancake. Can see 10 miles for sure when up in treestand!! I hope to get out this weekend but another snowstorm is predicted so I will have to wait and see. I will post up as soon as I can get out. Don't have as much snow but still a pain in neck to shoot off bench when it is 10-15 degrees. At least barrel doesn't heat up! Let me know how you make out. Curious, are you roll crimping the loads? I am roll crimping to fairly close overall length for consistency of pressure on the laod. I am trying to fabricate an adjustable length gauge so you can just roll crimp down to a stop using various thickness filler wads to make up length difference. This slug loading is starting to get real interesting.

I live on Cottonhill.  On the s. side of Middleburgh off 145 a left turn. Up past the town barn. I work for the phone com. in Middleburhg. Got 20 ac. Love it here. Grew up up north in St Lawrence Co. Rifle Country.

Sorry,  I forgot to tell you.   I'm from St. Lawrence Co. also.  Born in Ogdensburg.  Moved away at the age of 7.  Still love the St.Lawrence and  memories on the island across from Cardinal Ont.

I also was born in Ogdensburg. Lived in Rensselaer Falls and went to Canton school. Moved here 25 years ago. We have a camp on the Oswegotchie river in Rensselaer Falls. Great bass and northern fishing.

C Mac,
Know exactly where you mean. Beautiful view of Schoharie River. Great smallie and wallie river. Caught some really nice browns upriver from you over the years. Chuck hunting was second to none. You make me jealous out here. I would move back in NY minute but wife really likes it here and my son will probably stay out here as well so gotta stay put. My wife went to Cobleskill so we know your area pretty good. Had a cousin second or third or forth removed. (if you know what I mean)..who use to run a flower/gift type shop in town. He moved up north to Adirondacks to get some elbow room I guess. His wife doesn't like it up there since they are basically snowed in 4 months of year. Beautiful country that isn't appreciated in the Midwest. I did get back to hunt the Adirondacks this year and killed nice 8 pt. Typical Adirondack hunt. 20+ miles to next road and I have to go back in 2 hours before daylight to get even close to where I hunt. Killed him at 8:45 and got him out to 2 track at 4:30 that afternoon. One more mile and someone would have been dragging me out. Went one too many ridges for that one. Keep us posted and I will do same.

Just came back from range. Moly coated SPW slugs average 25 fps faster than standard slug load. Mica coated SPW slugs lost 25 fps. IMR SR 4756 at 42.0 gr. = 1400 fps and < 1" group (ten slugs through same hole) at 50 yds. Blue Dot didn't do as well. 46.0 gr = 1440 fps 2.5" group at 50 yards. Got some room left for IMR SR 4756 to bump up so maybe I can reach 1450 or 1500 fps. This is with a 505 gr. SPW sabot slug combination so it is a stiff load. Shot 35 slugs this afternoon and it wasn't tooooo badadd, diiddnt botther mee a bite.
