Sabot Loading
« on: November 07, 2004, 05:25:37 AM »
I bought some hornady 50 cal 45 250 GR SST's for my Huntsman. This summer when it was warm, they loaded fairly easy. Went to the range the other day and the windchill was about 20 degrees. The barrell was cold and so were they. Boy, those things went down hard. I was wondering if it's ok to grease the sides of sst sabots with crisco before loading?  Powerbelts go down alot easier, but are not as acuurate at 100 yards for me. thanks for any help.

Try using spit........or a liquid cleaner like LeHigh Valley.  All you want to do is get it seated, right? The colder it gets the stiffer/harder the grease!

laker252,

Couple of thing that I do may help a little:

1. Keep sabot/bullet in shirt pocket, under coat,to keep the plastic sabot warm= easier loading.

2. Try the T/C 45/250gr Shockwaves. Same bullet as SST's but understand they load easier than the Hornady sabot. Must be a little thinner plastic side walls. Have some, but have not tried yet myself.

3. In cold weather,I use a smear of BoreButter on some of my sabots that are tight loading. It helps...however,you would want to try it to check for any impact change. Some of my front stuffers will shoot a little high with the BB on the sabots.
