I got a deer!
« on: November 07, 2004, 01:13:36 PM »
I finally shot a deer with my Marlin 336CS 35 Rem. It wasn't big, but its still venison in the freezer! I thought it was a doe. Sense I haven't gotten a deer in a few years and I have a doe permit for area 6K it didn't matter. He's about 85 pounds or so. I shot him at about 75 yards in the woods. He turned as I pulled the trigger. I broke his left rear leg and the bullet went on and broke his right front leg as well. I had to shoot him again when I got to him. If he didn't turn it would have been a nice heart/lung shot. Anyway I got one! I'm gonna post this on a few other forums!

Nice Going NYH!
I believe you said you were in the 6K region along the Rt.49 northern boundry, correct?  I have a camp there on Rt.49, about a mile from Cleveland, NY.  When I get up there, I hunt that area as well.  There's some state forest there I enjoy tramping through, but have yet to nail one.  We should get together if you are still looking to fill a tag.

The deer are small in that region (probably because it's all second growth forest and there's no local farmers to grow corn). They tell me because of a rough winter last year that they're not seeing much to hunt this year

savageT, I shot this deer in Happy Valley. Just off RT. 104 in Williamstown. I hunt in that area more then any other. I live in the " southern zone" but hardly ever hunt in it! I'm a rifle kind of guy  ! I would like to get together and hunt with you. It's always nice to meat new people to hunt with. bubba said he would meat me in Ogdensburg for some pheasant hunting! I just don't when I'll find the time!

NYH.............that would be great!  I prefer rifles, and my old Savage 99 in .300 Savage and hunting in the northern zone.  Many years ago as a young teen I taught guitar lessons up in Camden/Williamtown on Rt 13.  Quite a good hike from Syracuse!  We're on the border of the northern/southern zones with our camp.  We'll have to get together and maybe we can share our "hotspots".

Bubba, I've talked to also....I'm from Ogdensburg, but only a couple relatives remain up in that area.  I have cousins in Gouverneur and one in Morristown.  Some of my fondest memories are summers on the "River" and grandparents in the "Berg".

I dont use it much anymore because it means too much to me, but, I get it our for exercise occassionally. Do you reload for yours? NYH anytime you can get the time let me know. And by the way Conga rats on the deer.

Hey Guys,
It is really nice to read about (3) hunters getting together on this forum and developing a friendship. I will be looking forward to more posts about hunting your hunting seasons. I hunted north of Rome back in the late 60's which isn't very far from your area.

Hi Bubba!
Nice hearing from you.  I'll see if I still have a photo or two of my 99T on the computer I can send you.  I'll bet you a pound of "Houvelton Extra Sharp Cheddar" there's a lotta 'ole 99's up there in your neck-o-the-woods!  Wish I had a few more!  I'm just an old south-paw that loves his lever carbines :agree:

How's the hunting up there......Did you have any luck @ early m/l season?  Right now, as I write this, it's snowing like crazy and I think we'll be shoveling the stuff before we see the sun again.  I put away the lawnmower and filled up the snowblower just in time.  Good Luck and look forward to seeing your Dad's photos of his '99.

I have a Winchester model 88 in 308 Win. My dad bought it new when he was 16. It was made in 1962 so it's a good one. I guess they changed the way they manufactured them in 1964. When he bought this rifle he was going to buy a Savage 99 in 300 Sav. I don't know why he got the Winchester over the Savage but I'm glad he did. I'm not knocking the Savage at all but I love that Winchester! I shot two deer with it!

NYH- Congrats on the deer.  I hope you can relive the joy from that day with every meal you have from the venison.
I live about 20 minutes from Happy Valley, and now that there is some snow on the ground, I may swap my bow for a gun and head up there in search of a buck.  Infact, I may go up there tomorrow morning.  If'n anyone wants to meet me at the Grist Mill before the sun rises, email me at REO341@aol.com.  I will check my mail before I go to bed.

Sounds good raging but tomorrow is one of my busiest days giving injections at work.  No way I could get away

Well, I went bow hunting in the SZ of Oswego Co. this morning, instead.  I walked right up to some bedded yearling bucks, who thought they were hidden in the goldenrod.  I love hunting in the first snowfall!  A little later, I was standing against a tree when another yearling 6 point walked by at 15 yards.  He looked hard at me, but didn't spook.  I had a shot, but I am done shooting yearling bucks, and I am restricting myself to shooting 2.5 year old bucks or better, or does.  I'm sure he would have tasted great, but If I want to see bigger bucks, I gotta let the smaller ones go.

Raging 480,
Excellent decision Sportsman!!!!!  I'm proud to know you,  for thinking of the conservation issue.  Now what is the SZ in Oswego County?
