I shot a deer with my 336CS 35 Rem!
« on: November 07, 2004, 03:05:02 PM »
A while back I started the post "What have you taken with your 35 Remington???". At that time, I hadn't taken anything with my Marlin 336CS 35 Remington. Today I shot a deer with it. It was a buck but I thought it was a doe when I shot it. I have a doe permit in the area I was hunting so it didn't matter. It wasn't that big, about 85 pounds, but I haven't gotten a deer in a few years so I shot it!

How did the 35 do? Did it put it right down?

Yes and no!

Yes it put it right down but thats because I broke the left rear leg and the right front leg when I shot it. He was walking slow through really thick woods at about 75 yards. I had to pick a lane "so too say" to shoot. When he got to the lane he turned and stepped up just as I pulled the trigger. It was slightly uphill. To be honest if he didn't turn when I pulled the trigger I would of shot right under him and would have missed all together. The bullet hit about an inch lower then his belly in his left rear leg and then went on and got his right front leg. The exit wounds in both legs were golf ball size. I applied the finisher when I got to him. Judging by ALL the exit wounds I was impressed. If he wouldn't have turned and went up slightly, it would have been a heart/lung shot!

That kind of puts the "theory" that the 35 Rem is a wimpy cartride right in the toilet. To go through 3 feet of deer and exit, that bullet did its job. were you shooting factory or hand loads?

big medicine, I hope I didn't mislead anyone. The first shot hit his rear leg then went under his belly and into his front leg. It broke his legs knocking him to the ground ASAP. I had to shoot him again when I got to him, that one was an impressive exit wound!

Ok, I thought it went throught the hind leg, through the body and exited out the front leg. Were you shooting factory or hand loads?

My dad killed several deer with his Marlin .35 Rem.
I took it to Tennessee several years ago and shot 300 pound boar.
It was running broadside to me at 75 yards. The 1st shot went a bit too far back, but broke the spine dropping it instantly. I put the finisher into it at 50 yards hitting is just behind the right shoulder. The perfectly expanded factory 200 grain bullet was just under the hide of the off shoulder.
That bullet hit the hard gristle plat, broke 4 vertebras and nearly exited the off side gristle.
Any that has shot wild boar knows that shoulder gristle is thick and hard!
The .35 has ALWAYS been a great woods round out to 125 or so yards.
Wish I still had that Marlin!

I was using factory Remington 200 grain Soft Point Core Lokt. I'm going to start reloading soon. I have heard that you can get a lot more out of the 35 Rem. then you can get out of the 30-30 Win. if both are hand loaded!

Most of the people that tell you "I shot a deer with a 35 Rem. (or 30-30, 41 mag., 44 mag., 32 Spe. and other cartridges in this group) and it ran about  75 MILES before it died" forget to tell you some very important details like I shot it in the gut or I shot and hit a four inch pine tree before it hit the deer, or the deer was running and I hit it in the rearend!

Its funny, I had a guy tell me one time that my 280 Remington was a "girls gun" and I should get rid of it and get a Remington 300 Ultra Mag. for white-tail deer hunting. This guy probably has a two inch- well never mind. The 300 Ultra Mag. won't kill a deer any better then my 280 will under my hunting circumstances and my personal abilities.

Yep.....Dead is dead.........I don't believe a fellow has to worry as bad about the bullet getting over the next hill and creating havoc 2 counties away with a big bore......

victorcharlie, don't get me wrong, I'm not telling anyone not to use a "big gun". If thats what someone wants to use thats great, this is America! Just sometimes you hear people putting certain cartridges down as being under powered when thats not the case at all. Specially when it was the shooters fault for not doing his/her part.

Take my situation for example. The deer turned as I pulled the trigger. I was lucky I hit both of his legs and was able to finish him off quickly. If I would have hit just one leg and the deer ran off and I couldn't find him, which could of very easily happened, it would have been my fault a million percent. It wouldn't have been the rifle, cartridge, the scope or anything else. A lot of people blame their mistakes on other thing!

Most deer are taken well within 100yds.Once I killed one at around 125yd.s hard to figure exactly ,I shot over a steep hollow in a clearing of a Hemlock forest & laural thicket. I was hunting with a 336 30/30 170gr. Cor-lokt, lung shot bullet sraight tru,( I never have re-covered a Cor-Lokt bullet) The small buck ran around 20 or 30 yd.s It was dead when I got to him.

Buckeye, like I said, if you do your part, our "brush guns" usually work very good! The longest shot I've ever taken at a deer was a little over a 100 yards and that was with a shotgun of all things. I've hunted at my aunt and uncles farm where you could shoot 300 yards. I've just never had the opportunity!

I got my Marlin 336 .35 Rem back in 1968 and have never needed another deer rifle for hunting in NY. The factory 200 gr bullets have dropped every whitetail. One time I shot a 4 pointer that was facing straight on to me at about 35 yds, the bullet traveled the full lenght of the buck and came to rest in the rear hip joint. Like others have said, the longest shot I had needed to make was about 120 yds, most were under 100 yds.

Warren, had almost the exact results myself. I shot a small buck dead on in the brisket. He dropped at the shot. As I was loading him onto the vehicle, I noticed a lump under the skin at the hindquarter. The 200 gr CoreLoct had gone the entire length of the deer and through half of his hindquarter before coming to rest under the hide. This shot was made w/ a M600 Remington instead of a Marlin, but it was with a Marlin level reload.

Nice kill i got one that i thougt was a doe to almost same story cause i had not shot one in a while to, but mine was with the 1894 in 44 mag 75 yrd. shot open sights. my uncle told me it was just an oversized handgun but he wasn't laughing when i told him about the deer . People and my friends down here in texas always say that you need like 30-06 or bigger to kill a good buck but like you i think that the big calibers are used to compensate man hood if you catch my drift. First deer i ever shot was a good sized doe and droped it right on the spot with a model 700, 243. And that is the only caliber my dad ever used groing up.

I emailed Marlin a while back and told them that if they would start making the 336 .35 Remington in stainless, I'd be forced to buy yet another, deer rifle. No response yet?

my dad has a 336 marlin in 35 the gun became his when his brother died
that was in 1978. Anywho, that  rifle has taken a few animals
and some coke bottles over the last 20+ years and to me marlins are hard to beat

New York Hunter, I've always had an interest in this particular gun and caliber. One of those that never got the magazine hype that it should of, in my opinion. I always considered it the "Hidden Woodsmans Rifle" because of the lack of publicity. Did you come by this gun by inheritance? Take care and have fun with that rifle, Steve.

New York Hunter, if you get a chance, how about a picture of your rifle? I just love older guns, older whiskey and younger women? Not really, I'll stick with the woman I've got, been with her for 27 years.

It appears that ebonite thinks that you shot your deer on November 7th, which in some areas is before the season opens.  We all trust that the area where you actually shot the deer was indeed open for deer hunting on November 7th.  Not everyone hunts in their home state ebonite.....

Lone Star, I did shoot this deer on Nov. 7th, 2004. I shot it in area "6K". Its in the "Northern Zone" of New York State. The "Northern Zone's" regular deer season started on Oct. 23rd. 2004 and closed on Dec. 5th. 2004. As you can see Nov. 7th. 2004 is pretty much right in the middle of the season!

I would think that if someone (ebonitekid767) was going to accuse someone else (me) of shooting a deer before the season started and the accuser himself has listed that he also lives in New York State.........he/she would or should know that there are two different big game hunting zone's in the state..........and the dates are not the same! But ebonitekid767 being the authority that he/she is.............probably knew this!

One more thing. The "Southern Zone's" regular deer season started on Nov. 22nd. 2004. As you can see Nov. 7th 2004 is 15 days not 12 days before the "Southern Zone" season opened. It appears "arithmetic" (math) may also be an issue for ebonitekid767 too! :excuseme:  :bye:
