Mystery Mec 650 bought on Ebay
« on: January 25, 2003, 07:12:53 PM »
I just bought a 12 gauge MEC 650 shotgun shell reloader on Ebay. It is orange rather than the normal MEC red. I don't think it has been re-painted, but may be wrong.  The charge bars are numbered 500 rather than 502.

Other letters on the 4 included charge bars include; PA, 8C, OA, and OH.  The charge bars do not allow for powder bushings to be inserted; having permanent holes for powder and shot.

The MEC name tag is missing, so I am assuming it is a MEC 650. It matches the parts list and instruction manual downloaded from MEC's web site about 99%.

Any ideas? My guess is it is a very early model MEC 650 or one sold under a different brand name.

Any help would be appreciated.
If it isn't fun, it probably isn't worth doing.

Sounds like early 650. I have one I bought new in 1970. Primer feed is straight tube, no tray like they use now. Mine is red though. I looked through my old manuals and can't find the one that gives the charge bar specs. I THINK that 8C is 1 1/4 oz shot for use with Green Dot powder for a good pheasant load, but I'm not sure. The 8 bars for the Super 250 and 600jr presses were for that load. I called MEC recently about some information on the old style 650 and on their Super 250 and got nowhere. They have information only on current product lines and variations. The guy I talked to hadn't even heard of the Super 250. He seemed to think I was pulling his leg. The old manuals gave specifications for all the different bars. Maybe throw and weigh some charges and compare results to current loading specs?

I appreciate the info on my MEC 650. I have been going through the manual, getting the unit back into usable condition.  Regarding the existing charge bars, I think I'll buy new bars that work with the powder bushings that I already have.

MEC Reloader Suggestion

Rather than purchase the charge bars and bushings I would see if you can get an adjustable bar.  I just bought one myself and it works great.  I would highly recommend scaling the initial powder and shot loads as they were somewhat off from the factory chart.  They were off on the conservative side.  Ken
