I have built this rig and it does work (2-C cells) with household ammonia. My concerns were for copper fouling which I seemed to have in my M38 Swedish Mauser. However, I find I'm still getting allot of black gunk on my patches which I fear is powder and lead buildup.
To answer your question about lead removal, I think there isn't a good lead solvent that is easily available but someone recommends using:
2 parts white vinager
2 parts household ammonia
4 parts distilled water
I haven't tried that solution for the electrolytic cleaner. I have used J-B bore cleaning compound w/ Breakfree or Kroil to scrub the bore and that does an amazing job of getting the crud out!! Then follow up with another electrolytic cleaning (to see if you still have copper traces), followed by a good bore cleaner like Ed's Red and lots of patches. Usually these milsurp bores have never truely been cleaned very well and have rested for years with Cosmoline packed bores.
