Anybody use the outters foul out III? My brother in law said he would be afraid to use it due to the possibility of eroding the barrel. I think i want one though, just wanted to check the experience here. Also would a bore snake work for breaking in a barrel? Pulling it through after every shot should remove most fouling, and particles from machining. Thanks- Tad

Tad,
Most people really like the BoreSnakes for the convienence factor. I prefer going to the Otis System cables that use seperate patches. That way you are always pulling a clean patch through the bore every time.

I have a Foul Out II. Love it. I use it primarily for lead. You would not believe what comes out even after the barrel appears clean.

I have built a couple of these and still haven't spent as much as one foul out.

The only thing I did different was buy a battery holder from Radio Shack.

This thing works realy good on those nasty old Milsurp barrels.

Thanks for the great link DD! I think i'll try that. One thing though, have you heard what solution to use for lead? I wonder if amonia works the same for both. Thanks again- Tad

I have built this rig and it does work (2-C cells) with household ammonia. My concerns were for copper fouling which I seemed to have in my M38 Swedish Mauser. However, I find I'm still getting allot of black gunk on my patches which I fear is powder and lead buildup.

To answer your question about lead removal, I think there isn't a good lead solvent that is easily available but someone recommends using:
2 parts white vinager
2 parts household ammonia
4 parts distilled water
I haven't tried that solution for the electrolytic cleaner. I have used J-B bore cleaning compound w/ Breakfree or Kroil to scrub the bore and that does an amazing job of getting the crud out!! Then follow up with another electrolytic cleaning (to see if you still have copper traces), followed by a good bore cleaner like Ed's Red and lots of patches. Usually these milsurp bores have never truely been cleaned very well and have rested for years with Cosmoline packed bores.
