question for Fred M regarding .25/06 and tsx
« on: November 08, 2004, 11:56:40 AM »
read your post on the performance of the tsx. i've got a box i'm thinking about loading up for a january deer hunt. i was interested to know what load you used? do you recommend using the same data for lead bullets, like in the nosler catalog? how do you think the bullets perform at close and long range?
thanks

question for Fred M regarding .25/06 and ts

thelaw.
As you perhaps know I gave away the 25-06 H&R Ultra and shoot only the Ruger#1 in 25-06 with a 26" barrel. This rifle will handle a lot more pressure without sticking or springing the action than the H&R. This is not a critic but a fact.

The load I use is made up with Alliant Reloder 22 and CCI200 primers. 100gr TSX bullet seated into the lands .015". Bullets are Moly plated(NECO process) Velocity is 3440Ft. You will find the loads for this powder on  Alliant web site.

Due to the fact that these bullets are grooved and Moly plated they will produce higher velocities with normal loads. But since the Moly and the grooves reduce friction more powder is needed to get these velocities, without stretching the brass or expanding the primer pockets.

Sofar I have only killed two deer at no more than 100yards and have not recovered a bullet, exit wounds were 2-3" on both deer shot through the ribs. One shot was angled towards the rear and blew out part of the intestines. These two deer made only a couple of steps before the dropped.

From what I have seen I believe this bullet will deck a deer at 400yards stone dead with a good shot. I never shoot deer that far. The hydrostatic shock by the full weight of this bullet is devastating. There were no bullet fragments of any kind to found in these two deer.

I really think these bullets are the cats meow in that caliber. I fired a few in my 25 Hunter and produced great accuracy in that gun too.

I had banged the 25-06 last Saturday and toke it out to the range today
fired two shots at 100 meters both bullet went into the same hole. No change in sight settings. The smalest three shot group with this bullet and load was .216" at 100 meters.

That I am tickled with this bullet and load would be an understatement. The load I use is save in my rifle and was carefully worked up with a Chrono, but I wont publish the load since  it is max. It is at least 240ft faster than I got with the H&R Ultra, also I never tested the TSX bullets in that rifle. I think if I pushed that bullet real hard I could get close to 3500ft but that would be pretty hot and no need for it.

I used the same load with a 100gr Nosler BT it clocked 60ft less at 3380 ft.
But also very accurate and so are the 100gr Hornady Interlocks my favorite befor the TSX.

For now that is ther best I can do for you.
