Weatherby Ultralite Mark5 in 30-06

I don't personally own a Weatherby ultralite, but some of my friends do.  I thought about getting one, due in part to the fact that they truly are quite light.  However, like your experience, most of these guns apparently do not have out-of-the-box accuracy like the Remington M700s, which all of mine shoot sub inch at 100 yards.  (Then again, I have heard that the Remington Titanium light weight rifles also do not have that great of accuracy.)

On the other hand, I guess you will be able to get better accuracy since you handload.  Also, accuracy probably is not THAT important of a factor considering that you shot your buck at 60 yards.

It's all about priorities, and a lightweight rifle is more important to you than having a heavy tack-driver.  No problem, it sounds like, based upon your needs, your Weatherby is a real winner.   :grin:

Yepper, I got one too and LOVE it!  Started out a Moose hunt with a 338 Ruger No1, then a Ruger 45-70, ended it with the Wby Ul 30-06 when the other two guns like to broke me to carry them.

Ventilated a 289 pound Russian with a Rem 180 PSP and was impressed witht he damage.  Pig took the hit at about 20 yards, turned left, went in a tight circle shooting blood from the exit wound some 3 feet, and then did the finale piggy brake dance.  Effective, VERY effective.

There was a time in my life when I shot nothing BUT Weatherbys, and I did some impressive kills with them, from the 30-06 right up through the 460 Wby.  Of all, the 378 Wby was the most vicious killer, wicked wicked rifle :roll:

The gun to the left of us here is an Ultra Light in 300 Weatherby. Great rifle, very accurate with 200 grain A-Frames. It just kicked to hard for me, so I sold it. Loaded for Bear it weighed 8.17lbs. I don't think you can go wrong with one in 338-06. I think it's just a matter of time before Federal starts selling loads. There kinda spendy though. The rifle that is...

One of the advantages of these rifles that I haven't seen mentioned is the 24" barrel. Lite weight with a long barrel, that's nice. The magnums are 26" long in Weatherby calibers and 7mm STW.

I don't  have the Ultra light weight but have the standard synthetic  and love it.  It is my most accurate sporter.  Even this "regular" weight rifle is less than other makers standard.  I have love this since I got it.  I like the extra long barrel also.  A complete thumbs up.

I bought my first Weatherby; it’s a Mark V Synthetic in 30-06 Springfield.

I have an older pristine Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40mm Matte scope with matte finish Leupold standard base and low rings to use for this rifle.
I only reload and I am going to try some 150, 180 & 220 grain bullets using IMR-4350, IMR-4831 & IMR-7828.

Bullets are Hornady InterLock 150 grain for deer sized game, Hornady InterLock 180 grain & Nosler Partitions 180 grain and Swift A-frame 180 grain bullets if I get the chance to hunt Elk someday.   I also have some Hornady InterLock 220 grain for close range black bear.

I have one and I love it.  It is my favorite rifle to hunt with.

If I were limited to one rifle(and I'm really glad I'm not) this would be it.

It shoots really consistent 1.25" groups with 165gr  Hornady Spire-Points (my favorite .308" deer bullet).  An inch and a quarter doesn't sound sexy but it does what needs to be done. 

The stock fits me well, which makes the heavier recoil of the lighter rifle easy to manage.

It's light enough to carry, accurate enough to hit what I shoot at, and the .30-06 will kill anything I'm likely to hunt anytime soon.

I've got a Weatherby UL in 7-08 and love it!  I've got two handloads (140 Ballistic Tip and 140 Partition) that shoot to the same point of aim at 100 yards.  And both loads shoot two shot groups into less than one inch.  The third shot always flies off, presumably due to heat.

Only finicky aspect I've experienced is that the long freebore requires handloads to be seated longer than specs. 

I also own a 700 Ti in 270 Win that is not nearly as accurate as the Weatherby UL and it's handloads.
