357-44 vs 357-41
« on: November 09, 2004, 08:41:40 AM »
What's the consensus on the 44 Mag case necked down to 357 vs. the 41 Mag case necked down to 357?  I am given to understand that in a rifle the 357-44 is the clear winner but I am thinking revolver where it seems to be more of a contest.  I am planning this on a 357 Ruger Blackhawk for which I have an extra 9 mm cylinder to do the conversion on.

The 44 case is said to be oversized while the 41 case allows more pressure.

On the other hand I am already running the 357-44 in a S&W, so if I go with that in the Ruger, I avoid having to get another set of dies, etc.

Howdy,
If I had to do it again.I would just go with the 357/44.
I have a 357/41 or Reeders 356 GNR.It is a hot little round but you already have dies etc for 357/44.
Reeder charges $100 for cylinder ream and $90 for dies.So with shipping it is a little over $200.
I have not had my 357/44 long, couple of weeks. So I can not really say what round is better.Still working up laods. The dies are cheaper.
Ream job was done by a friend that had a reamer. So in the end the 357/44 was a lot cheaper route.Plus 44 shells are everywhere.
I have shot both of these rounds in a 4 5/8 and 6 inch blackhawk.
With your ruger you may be able to load a little hotter then your S&W.

I just got a .356 GNR cylinder for my Bisley and would appreciate any loading data you might be able to share, including things that you may have tried and found not to work.

How are you going to get as much powder in a necked down .41 case as you would a necked down .44 case. Velocity is your goal isn't it?

I love the Bain & Davis, one of my favorite rounds.  Haven't had a 356 GNR but may some day, but right now, I can assure you that the 357/44 B&D is a winner! It is better with bullets less than 180 grains than heavier though.
