The most-used scope on the line is the big (82mm) Kowa. Get the LER 27X lens. Most prefer the straight tube to the angled version. There may be a tiny bit better resolution with the flourite lenses but most don't feel that it's enough to justify the added cost.

I have the Leica Televid and it's certainly mechanically superior to the Kowa. I'd rate the optics a toss-up...and I've compared them side-by-side. Leicas are also completely water-proof. There have been problems with the Kowas there.

All that said, the Germans don't understand 'augenabstand' (eye-relief) and the Japanese have got it down very well. The ability to use the Kowas without burying your eyeball in the ocular (or to use them comfortably while wearing glasses -- which IMO anyone with a measurable IQ does anytime he's on the range) makes all the difference. The German glasses -- Leica, Zeiss, Swarovski (Austrian) etc -- are excellent but they just require you to get too cozy with the eye-piece.

You just have to treat the Kowas a 'little' more tenderly...they aren't as tough.

hi guys    i have a swarovski  ST-80.When other shooters view through it they say it's like eye SEX.IT is very clear ,sharp and has plenty of eye relief even for eye glass wearers the only problem with this scope is its price. Another nice scope is the 78 or 80mm PENTAX .the new zeiss is nice and the leica is fine. Just view through the scope you want to buy on a dark overcast rainy day. it will help you make up your mind

At an NRA convention here in the US I saw and tried some Fujinon optics.  They make  60 and an 80 mm spotting scopes.  They also make a 27X eyepeice which has 31mm of eye releif. which wold be very nice.  I would suggest loking at their website.

Fujinon has a very good reputation with industrial/commercial optics.  They do not seem to market much in the US or Europe for their private sales.  Looking at cost the other day I was able to find a reputable mailorder camers store in New York which had the 80mm objective and 27X eyepeice with cover for $500 US.

If weight is not an issue (or money either I suspect) they make some observation binoculars.  25x and 150mm objectives.  Weight listed at 40 lb

I have no idea about their marketing or availability down under.
