7-30 Improved information wanted
« on: January 26, 2003, 06:47:59 AM »
Does anyone have any knowledge about the 7-30 Waters Imp?  Does it offer enhanced performance over the original 7-30?  What makes it improved?  I assume it would need custom loaded ammo.  I have a 7-30 so am very familiar with that caliber.

:D  billjoe, i'm interested in these cartridges also. it should give more velocity than the original case. it's acomplished by fireforming the case to an improved form. the shoulder will blow out to a sharper angle, and also if there is any taper to the case, it will become more straight walled. but i believe the 7-30 improved just blows the shoulder forward to give more capacity. someone correct me if i'm wrong. you would also need 7-30 improved dies,i guess. i'm not sure how much velocity you gain, but from what i hear 100-200 fps over an unimproved case. the 30-30 ackley improved is very interesting also.

I've got a 7mm/30-30 Imp.  It has a slightly longer neck than the 7-30 Waters, so 7-30 ammo won't chamber.  Mine has a 40ยบ shoulder/minimum body taper.

A true 7-30 Waters Imp would have a very slight increase in case capacity.

I believe SSK's 7x30JDJ has a shorter neck than the 7-30 Waters.
