95 Cow Moose taken
« on: November 10, 2004, 08:36:44 PM »
As of 1400hrs today there had been 95 Cow Moose taken out of the Wood River Control Use area.  The biologist flew over the area this morning and said that there was a lot of them still in the valleys leading out onto the Tanana Flats.  For the last couple of years I've noticed that all the willows in the area have been broken down and nothing standing over four feet high.  Personally I think they are cutting back on the numbers just in time to prevent a massive die off.   Leaving in the morning, going over there to set traps at kill sites.  May as well take some predators while I'm at it.

Moose-Hunter:  Just got back tonight, saw over 30 cow moose being hauled out.  Probably seen over 100 people out there.  Everyone I had talked to had taken one.  Alot of Cows got taken this weekend.  I took mine Friday morning, and my partner got one Saturday morning.

summit-x:  We went down the Rex Trail.  After crossing Gold King creek at Keels Mine, stay on the main trail for about a mile then turn right.  Follow the new trail.  Moose will be legal on both sides of the trail now.  I found mine about 1/3 of the way up the hill.  Rode to within 250 yards of her and took the shot from there.  But the further we went out the trail the more Moose we saw.  My partner got his about five miles farther than mine.

I'm currently not aware of what's happening out there this week. I had to go to Anchorage Monday and got a stint put in where my heart By-Pass failed.  I'm not up and running yet. Sort of been out of touch this week.

Oh yes, by the way someone asked what I used to shoot that Moose with.  I used a Handi-rifle in 30-06.  180 grain Nosler Partition, in front of IMR 3031.  Shot her in the forehead, from 250 yards.    She was lying down, and when we drove our snowmachines to within 250 yards she raised her head to look at us.  Single shot and she just dropped her head, never kicked.

Make sure you call F&G before leaving.  At the rate they are being taken they may close the season early.  Do you have somewhere to stay?  It's awful cold camping out.  Don Keels runs a Gold Mine at Gold King creek.  Don puts hunters up in his bunk house, but I don't know what his fee is.  To find his place, turn South at Gold King creek.  You can't miss the creek, it's been all torn up from mining, and there is an excavator sitting on the north side of the trail.  Don's place is about 1-1/2 miles from the trail.  Lots of old equipment lying around, big sheds, and a new log house.  I may be out there at the same time, I'm looking for wolves, cayotes, any preditor with fur.  I've also got to cut some fire wood for the cabin.  Stop at the cabin, south side of the trail, about 200 yards before the second river (actually Tatlinka Creek).  It's 27 miles from the highway to the cabin.  The owner of the cabin will be there at that time also.  My name is Rog Hunter, his name is Mike Pearson.  Good luck hope you get a Moose.
