Ramrod Changed!!
« on: November 11, 2004, 04:28:57 AM »
HEY,
Recently ordered a new Ramrod for my Huntsman and got a big surprise.  Instead of receiving a Brass colored ramrod, it is now all BLACK,  no more brass except for the Brass Jag.  Even the wood is black, had been trying to find some Birchwood Casey Brass Black but not in any stores in my area, no need for that now.  The Black ramrod looks a lot better under my barrel than the original Brass rod ever did.  Now if they could only find a way to make it better.

Hey Bruce, :D

Good find! I had not heard anything about NEF going to Black ramrods. I bet it does look good for sure. I always thought the brass was a little flashy for the rest of the gun.

I broke my original brass RR this spring and NEF sent me a replacement, but it was also bright brass.
Not wanting to go through breaking another one,I made a wooden RR that goes into the Huntsman and stained to match the stock.
Like your new black RR, it sure looks better to me than the bright brass.

did you make the wood one so that it extends, if so can you make a pic of it. Also I have a black one and it scratches easily.

My sidekick came with the black rod. It does look sharper

mastinson,

Sorry, cannot post pics right now,as daughter took digital cam with her to college. Hopefully, will be getting another soon though.

I use a two piece RR. The 7/16" RR in the gun is the same length as the factory brass one in it's retracted position ( 16"). I replicated the ring grooves same as the wood end on the factory one. Installed a 10-32" RR end cap on hardwood dowel and stained to match my stock.

I made a 8 1/2" extension with RR end caps on both ends....one end being female 10-32" and other end having male 10-32" brass stud ( I made my own RR caps from 40 S&W shell cases and a 10-32" machine screw from hardware... and all are epoxied in place). This extension also stained to match.

I can pull the extension from my fanny pack/or pocket and screw it to the RR in the same time it takes to unscrew, extend and lock the factory brass RR.
Only difference is that mine hasn't broken (have used at range many times) and looks great in the gun!
My RR weights 1 1/4oz and factory brass is 5oz.
By placing a portable wooden knob on the end (make or purchase from CVA),it's just like a range rod, except 2-piece,and I carry the knob also in fanny/possibles pack.
Heck, the whole RR only cost about a buck and was fun to make..AND I like the barrel balance better with the wood RR. :)

Post edit: Click on the Album link at page top and open the thumbnail print of a ramrod extension I used last year, much like the one described above.
