For those interested, there is a 30-30 barrel on ebay at this time.  I did a search of "rifle barrel" and found it.

Thanks Donaldo, I saw that a day or so ago and placed a bid on it. As of now mine is the only bid on it. I hope I get it.  as most of those here might know I have been looking for a 30-30 barrel for quite a while. That one on e-bay has a couple of extra holes dilled and tapped in it but I'm still anxious to get it. I think it is the same one I e-mailed a guy about earlier. I was the second one to speak up and was on the list for it. The original guy that spoke up (you know who you are and THANKS for the help) declined on his offer and let me know so I could buy it. I e-mailed the seller you told me he had changed his mind about selling it through the forum and was going to sell it on E-bay to get as much $ as he could for it. I have been watching E-bay for about a month now and it finally showed up and I bid....<><....

Mac, Thats nice of you and thanks, I do appreciate it. How about this, lets both watch it and if several others enter the bidding wars you would be welcomed to bid and I would not think less of you, your intentions are honorable. I will contact you as the time draws near(er) and we will see what has happened. There are just over 3 days left of the 5 day auction and no one else has bid yet. Perhaps the extra holes drilled in it have put them off....Thanks....<><....

Thanks....I might take you up on that.......never can tell what I would convert it over to to send back to ya

Hopefully...there will be a deer or 8 or so...hanging  by Saturday afternoon...that's how many is in the hunting party I'm going with...and I'll be hunting from a ladder stand..... instead on  tera-firma by myself, as I normally do...so...I'm a little aprehensive to say the least   It's been a few years since I used any type of man-made stand...but the terrain that I'm in almost demands to use one...if I hope to get a shot...the stand location I scouted...in just inside a swamp area next to a lake...with a cut corn field in front of me...with a 200-250 yard shot to the front ..to a small tree-lined gully that connects several fields in the area...and I'm literally in the swamp by 10-15 yards...so I have a chqance at both kinds of shots...wide open...and up close and personal...so in the mornings...the Handi 308 gets the nod...afternoons the Marlin 45-70 will make the trip out...so....Lord willing and he keeps Mr.Murphy away.........

Hope you get it.  I was not interested so that is the reason I posted it.  I guess since you had already bid on it I should have kept my mouth shut.  Anyway, I am holding out for a 6mmBR barrel.  Will not buy another barrel until I can get one of these.  By hook or crook.  For those of you interested there is a site devoted to the 6mmBR.  It is that and dot com.  I think this is the most interesting cartridge to come along in a long time.  It and it's siblings.  You really don't need a great big case behind the bullet.  Just the RIGHT size case.  The accuracy these guys are getting is almost unbelievable.

No problem Donaldo, If I had not known about it and saw what you posted here I would have been very thankful. We all try to help one another around here, that is part of what makes this such a great site. Hope you get your 6mmBR. Any thoughts on how your going to go about getting a barrel in that caliber for your Handi? Or are you looking at another gun in that caliber?....<><....

Mac, that sure sounds like a dream location. I have been unable to get to my camp to deer hunt yet ( :( ), I have to be here during the initial construction stage of our addittion. I did however talk with a buddy tonight that spent 2 days at my camp this week, he enjoyed it, slept next to the wood stove mostly, saw some sign but no deer, unusual for him. He left my camp and headed back for the 1-1.5 hour trip north to Millinocket Maine, had to brake hard to miss a BIG doe that jumped in front of his car in Brownville then saw a nice buck staddleing the center line by Turkey Trot Road near South Twin Lake south of Millinocket, saw it from about 100 yards away, slowed and drove right up to it before it would move, says he actiually parked in front of it for almost a minute with it looking at him (4 pt, eastern count) before it turned and walked off into the woods.
Anyway, good luck, have fun, and shoot straight, sounds as if you have a great place all set up....<><....

MSP Ret,

I also saw the 30-30 barrel on ebay.  As you may know, I've got a post on graybeards for a want for a 30-30 barrel.  I was going to bid on ebay one but I will not bid against you.  No need bidding it up.  But maybe you can help me get one too.  I found a guy who will trade me a 30-30 barrel for 22 Hornet or .223 barrel if I can find one for him.  (See my post)  Any help would be appreciated.

Good luck getting the one off ebay.

MSP Ret,
Don't have a clue about how to get a Handi in 6mmBR.  I am sure NEF will not sell me a barrel without a chamber.  Guess I could cut the lug off an old barrel and have it welded to a custom barrel.  Would rather have a pac nor or shilen or douglas or what ever over the NEF barrel.  I am sure that would be an expensive way to go.  If I do go ahead with the project it will probably be a bolt gun.  But would like to find a good single shot action, maybe a Rem. 40X.  Most of the really accurate bench rest actions are custom built, and cost around $1,000 just for the action.  Near as I can figure the least one could get by on a deal like that is about $2500 and that would be just for the rifle.  Custom dies, etc probably another 200-400 bucks.  So it is probably just a pipe dream, but you never can tell..... :-)  :-)

Donaldo, I have not even thought of this before but it seems very doable. If you took the underlug from a shotgun barrel (cheapest barrel you can buy) and get a good custom 6mm barrel the rest of the work could be done by any competent gunsmith. Most of the ejector mechanism is in the lug, just need an ejector itself from a .243 I would think. That and the rest could be reworked and fitted to you frame..You could at least have a 6mmBR even if it was in a Handi for (relatively) short money....Nothing is impossible, it just takes a bit longer, a good competent gunsmith, and a couple of bucks more....<><....

How about looking for a used Rem 700, perhaps in .243 but any would really do and then rebarrel it to 6mmBR, how much would the rebarrel cost if you ordered a barrel and had it installed locally? Perhaps it would be just as expensive to have the barrel supplier put the new barrel on and headspace and check it...

Folks: Like the rest of you I've been looking for a 30/30 for the last 2 years. I think all of you show some real class by being willing to pass on it.  Like wise I won't bid either, but if I run across more barrels, I'll post it, if I bid on one I'll post it.  Now one quesion, before I got involved with Handi Rifles, everytime I turned around there was a 30/30, now nod-da!
Wonder what happened???? Have A Good'un:   Duce:

I didn't realize that the 30-30 was such a rare find. I think I saw one at a place called Gun Shop in Goodlettsville, Tenn.  615-859-8822 :-)

MSP Ret.
You have presented some interesting thoughts there.  Umh.....do you think the shotgun lug is the same strength as the centerfire lugs?  I don't have that much experience with the handi's.  I only have one.  Maybe I could find a shot out barrel, anyone have one?  I just need the lug.  Sure would like to have a high quality barrel but maybe an adams & bennet or something like that might work.  Talked to my gunsmith friend today about this project.  He recommended the Rem 788 action.  I am not familiar with it but he said it was short, thick and stiff and totally round.  I would like to sleeve the action and about 4-6 inches of the barrel with an alum. sleeve and just bed the sleeve to the stock and let the rest of the barrel and action float.  Well it keeps me out of the beer joints and in the gun shops anyway.

Donaldo, I understand all the lugs are or the same material and the same strength.  All the blued steel rifle barrels made by H&R are of the same steel also. It is the receivers that are treated differently....<><....

The Remington 788 action is a great action, if I remember correctly is a bit less expensive than a 700 action and has forward locking lugs. It has been known for some great accuracy at less expense. It is a round action...It seems it work great for your application....<><....

Hellacatcher, thanks for the info, I have been looking for a barrel only to add to a receiver....<><...

MSP..
The Rem 788 action has rear locking lugs.  I have been doing some research about this action.  Apparently with the long bolt and rear lugs the high pressure cartridges, with 308 bolt face,  caused the bolt to compress slightly.  About .001" per 1000 rounds, which after a while caused excessive head space, ruptured cases, and thereby some law suits that Rem. lost.  They quietly stopped making the action.  This was only one of the reasons.  The other being that it was a low cost gun and outshot there more expensive 700.  So maybe I won't be looking for a 788 unless there is a replacement bolt with better steel.  Anyway I am going to post a new thread asking for a shot out NEF barrel, etc., just so I can get a lug.  Actually I think if I had a milling machine I could make one.  It would not have an extractor though.

My my, I am getting old, you are so right on the rear locking lugs on the 788's,  !! I had access to a milling machine for years and it would not be diffilcult to make a lug without an ejector/extractor but in the long run I think it would be much more convienent and cost effective to just scavage one from an old shotgun barrel and refit the proper extractor in the new barrel. There are cheap barrels out there, a 12 gauge would probably be the cheapest since there are more of them but grab whatever comes along or is offered, they are all the same....<><....

:D , Hey guys, thanks to all that refrained from bidding against me on the 30-30 barrel. I believe it is nickeled not stainless. The bidding has gotten up to $86.00 plus shipping with 5 more hours left. It seems to have passed the range of what would be reasonable for a used barrel. This is the same barrel that another beat me to that was offered on another forum. That original buyer backed out and sent me an e-mail so I contacted the seller as the second in line. He was very nice but said he had decided not to sell it through the forum but to put in on e-bay to get the most he could out of it. I think it may have had had iron sights on it at first since that is the way the 30-30 barrels come and the extra hole drilled and tapped on the barrel appears to be right where the rear sight would go. I cannot figure out how the front sight would have been attached though, it is not drilled and tapped for a front sight and the seller says there is no evidence of any soldering where a front sight would be. The barrel is 22" long.

SO--- To those interested please bid away, it's gotten to steep for me at more than a new barrel, not counting shipping and fitting of course, and I think it might go higher....<><....

Thanks Quickdtoo and Marv, it's up to $87.00 now with 5 hours and 4 minutes to go. Your so right marv, to d__n high. But I should have known, I have seen many things go for more than their new price on e-bay. There are deals to be had, but you know auctions, people get carried away in a bidding war....<><....

Actually, it's not more, a new stainless barrel is $109, so it's just about the same and no .30-30 ta boot from the factory any more.
