Mounting a Red Dot on the Blackhawk Hunter
« on: November 11, 2004, 07:17:16 AM »
Well seeing as how I purchased a Red Dot that cannot use the factory rings that came with my SBH Hunter I need to mount this red dot another way.  Do any of you guys have your sites mounted on aftermarket rails?  Here are a couple that I have found on the net...

This one is from Wiegand Combat Handguns, Inc.

This one is from B-Square

The Weigand rail runs $49.95 and the B-Square is $65.92 in stainless.

Let me know what you all think...

Thanks,
Mike

The Wiegand looks pretty good but I wouldn't give you 10 cents for the B-square.   KN

I have a B Square that I like

I have a B Square mount for a 357 that I like very much, but it is a little different from your picture.  Actually I have two Ruger 357 Blackhawks one with a Red Dot and one with factory iron sights.

The B-Square I have requires you to remove the rear sight screw and stuff and it screws into that for its rear attachment.  The front of the rail has a slot in it that fits over the front sight and what looks like a set screw from the side that helps hold it on to the front sight.

At first I was concerned that it might not stay in place, but the zero has not moved at all (at least for me).

Part of why I went with the B-square was it was available locally at far less than the manufacturer's suggested price, it didn't require any drilling of the Ruger, and it was in stainless to match the stainless Ruger Blackhawk I have.

What size Red Dot did you get?  Ruger and Leupold both make scope rings for the gun other than the 1" that come with the Hunter.

Most Red Dots are 30mm, shop around as Ruger charges $75+ for the rings unless you order it that way. The other problem is the distance between the rings, as most red dots will not fit in that space. Been there, working my way out. The B-squares would give you more versatility. I have found that I am printing better targets with red dots at 25 yds, as opposed to a 2x scope.

I purchased a Millett Redot SP-1 because it was a 1" and it also came with an extension tube.  Has worked great so far.
